After one member of the public's feedback, URA has ordered the halt and re-evaluation of a Chinatown mural featuring the smoking samsui woman.

What do you think of the state of this work-in-progress art piece?

What is the opinion of one public got to do with the artistic creation and rendition of a figure like samsui woman?

Exhibution reveals little-seen works by renowned artists from the collections of local schools. Comprising important names such as Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee, Chua Ek Kay and Ho Ho Ying, these artists are distinguished alumni and teachers of Catholic High School, Chung Cheng High School, Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution, and Nanyang Girls’ High School. The exhibition also includes works gifted by important overseas artists such as Liu Haisu, who had visited these schools.

Many of these works are seldom seen by the public. It is also the first time that these collections have been brought together for a joint showcase. From Cheong Soo Pieng’s oil paintings to Lim Tze Peng’s ink works, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the unique styles of these artists and the evolution of Singapore art from the 1950s to the present day.

Enchanted Forest
New paintings and early collages by Wong Keen

Wong Keen, on the new paintings (2023):

It’s all about painting.

For me, the starting point of a new series is always to build on my existing knowledge and exploration of form and colour, and I endeavour to create new images that have never been seen before.

Wong Keen on the early collages (1968~):

These have never been shown before, in fact they were stored away for a very long time. They characterised a period in my youth and my early experimentation with abstract inks; collages with discarded or found paper materials.

Creating and experimenting with these small-scale expressions was akin to a form of meditation for me. The habits that I cultivated in this early period also inform the techniques for my later works, especially with mixed media collage involving discarded or torn remains of rice paper.

Check out the show for yourself to look at some of his early works, vivid hamburgers, vibrant figures, as well as acrylics with an influence of Chinese painting!
