It's been a hot minute!

We had our last session with yesterday because he's going off to university and will only be back in 4 months. We will miss all that he brings to our weekly meeting and we wish him all our love. May the next couple of months abroad be a source of enrichment, nourishment and inspiration!

If you're wondering what's going to happen to Playwrights' Commune while he is away, don't worry, we're still here! We are very happy that we've managed to create a community of playwrights, and we're not going to give that up so easy, so the rest of us will keep Playwrights' Commune going. We hope to keep making these connections while holding space for playwrights, so keep your eyes peeled. More updates to come!

We love you Theo, take care and we'll see you soon!

Deonn: "um ok"

✨ Happy 2022 from some socially distanced playwrights in the sun! ✨

Our writers' group is back in full force, and with some new members! Today we welcomed Azura, Daniel and Dia to our writers group, and we also gently sent Jovan off as he enlists in the army this week.

Always a great way to kick off the new year by coming together. As we embark on some writing and editing together, we hope that this year will also bring about a lot of writing for all of you!

Take care, stay hydrated and always wear spf!

Our second dramatized reading was "Before You Go" by Danial Matin and directed by Chong Gua Khee.

Featuring: Sharda Harrison, Doreen Toh, Shrey Bhargava, Siti Khalijah Zainal and Chng Yi Kai, with sound design by Inch Chua.

Synopsis: (Content Warning: Su***de) This is a play about su***de. It is about one’s final moments and how, in those moments, one stands at the uncrossable threshold of despair. But at that very threshold, there is also the possibility of change and hope to be renewed. Such moments are small, quiet, subtle, and we sometimes don’t realise the little things (words, gestures, actions) that push people over the edge, or pull them back. It is a despairing play as much as it is a hopeful one. It is also a play about how intertwined our lives are and how our windows of salvation may be found, if not in ourselves, then in each other.

Many of our writers have been going through intense table reads with their plays, spending time with directors and actors from the theatre industry to read, dramatize and talk through their work.

Here's the reads that happened last week.:
Deonn Yang - "Lauren"
Nathaniel Tan "Jesus Loves Me"
Clarilyn Khoo "The Sound of Water"
Rachael Ng "Toilet Play"

We weren't kidding when we said we've been busy! The past week has had a slew of events at our space at 222. Joel Tan ran two workshops on playwriting: "How To Write A Scene" took our playwrights through the basic structure and requirements of a dramatic scene while "Dramatic Composition" opened our eyes to how we could play with different textures and shapes in our play.

Jin Yi held a workshop on devising theatre and we had our third and final Scratch Night, an open mic session to get feedback on scenes in a casual setting. As usual our writers groups, the foundation of our Open Studio, continued to meet online and in the space.

We also had zoom sessions with Centre 42 introducing our playwrights to future opportunities for life after Open Studio. Annika held a session about writing environmental theatre and Uma ran a session on directing.

We kicked off our series of dramatized readings with ‘One Kiss’ by Helmi Yusof, directed by Cherilyn Woo

Featuring: Seong Huixuan, Erwin Shah Ismail, Mehr Dudeja, Bright Ong, Timothy Wan and Shu Yi Ching.

Modern love is perilous, not least because dating apps have made it much easier to give up on an existing romance and look for a new one. ‘One Kiss’ is a suite of three plays about young people and not-so-young people looking for a lover’s touch, a hug, a taste, a kiss.

We had a series of workshops to equip out playwrights in different ways. Thomas Lim shared about revising and editing scripts, giving the participants hands-on experience with editing drafts. Shai helped us understand how to produce our own plays, sharing his own experiences in Singapore's theatre industry. Tejas taught us about using our smartphones to film plays and digital theatre making and Steph gave us a crash course in creating and performing our own stand up comedy.

Script reads and rehearsals are fully underway this week as our Open Studio plays move towards dramatized readings.
