Selected from the River Scene of Chapter 2 Animation of 2488—A Short Film by Tang Ling Nah

This scene is inspired by my father’s containing Chinese tea that he would bring when he went to drive his
In this scene, the father had run away from the red tiger and the daughter found the water bottle he dropped. But the tea had spilled and it went on and on to form a
Then the daughter saw yellow on the river and hopped into one. (When we were small, my father folded boats from newspapers. They were big enough to be seated in.)
This scene almost didn’t make it to the film as we had a tight schedule, but I went ahead to do it as it is very crucial flow to Chapter 3 animation.

When turned into a 360-degree video, I was pleasantly surprised that a was formed when the left and right edges were joined to form a 3-dimensional ! (See video in comments.)
It worked very well to create the waves that swept the daughter away to the next scene. I therefore encourage viewers to navigate around and let their imagination run wild, and not watch the film like any other “normal” film.

The using the spherical grid as guide was done by me.

The scene is inspired by my niece’s account of her zoo visit with my father. Then she was in preschool and my father drove her to the zoo and bird park during his taxi shift in the afternoon. It relates to one’s memory and forms the fun/fantastical moments in the film.

The scene of Chapter 2 Animation of 2488—A Short Film by Tang Ling Nah

The is inspired by my father’s love for animals and my niece’s account of her zoo visit with my father. I actually don’t remember details of visiting the zoo with my father, but we watched many animal documentaries by David Attenborough together.

Do you know that in the Singapore Zoo, there are two ?
But why do I have a in my animation?

During the scriptwriting stage, my co-writer and editor Looi Wan Ping suggested that maybe the tiger can be different. Maybe it is a tiger made of Chinese paper cut. I had that in my storyboard, but then I remembered I have this tiger given by a Taiwanese friend. In fact, it came with a yellow tiger. The red one becomes the tiger in my animation.
The talented illustrator helped me to design it into a 2D that I can use in my animation composition for the zoo. In fact, this scene was the first I drew and I made a lot of mistakes that I had to correct and the animation producer Jerome and assistant had to fine tune.
It was challenging but a great learning experience!

A documentation of drawing the River Scene of 2488—a 360-degree short film and checking it with Photoshop .

Drawing this scene was actually quite challenging and fun as I need to make sure that the edges join and is coherent when they are joined t form the spherical space. I had to redo a few times, but I got unexpected results for the ground portion. Interestingly, when turned into a sphere, a vortex-like pattern is formed. As one turns around, one seems to be spinning into the water as well. Hope the viewers navigate more in this segment and imagine themselves being in the vortex like the girl.

Video: Thanks to Jerome, the animation producer, I learnt that with Adobe Photoshop 3D I can convert the 2D image to ! It is almost magical!

This references a real scene at and was based on a drawn from the 360-degree video taken by the cinematographer Lee Sze-Chin.

My father’s hometown was in Lorong Buangkok, and he used to drive us there when we were young. I still remember the big where my father played with the dogs. But then, I was not very enthusiastic about meeting the dogs and the “ulu” place. Now, that area which his family lived had been replaced by new housing estate and is no longer recognisable. Only a small portion of Lorong Buangkok remains today and has become almost like a tourist spot. Much thanks to Lorong Buangkok representative Ms Sng for permitting us to film there.
