Getting My 10L Walstad Aquarium Ready Before Vacation ❤️🌱🦐🐟

A quick maintenance session before leaving for vacation. 🌱

The vallisneria had completely taken over the foreground, so it was time for a trim. I removed excess runners, cleared some floating plants, lightly vacuumed surface detritus, scraped algae from the glass, and finished with a 15% water change.

One thing I enjoy about a mature Walstad aquarium is that maintenance is usually simple and gentle. Just enough to keep the ecosystem balanced while letting nature do most of the work. ❤️🌱🦐🐟

A simple low-tech aquarium where houseplants and aquatic life thrive together. 🌱❤️

The Monstera Deliciosa is the centerpiece and main focus of this aquarium.

The pothos complements it by adding volume and creating a lush jungle vibe above the waterline.

I have added additional pothos cuttings to the aquarium. The pothos cuttings have spent the last 3 months adapting and growing strong roots underwater, while the Monstera Deliciosa continues to reward me with fresh new leaves.

Home to neocaridina shrimp, feral wild-type guppies, and a thriving little ecosystem.

Meal prep isn’t just for humans. 😆

Getting my 10 nano aquariums ready before vacation by packing daily portions of fish pellets and shrimp pellets into tiny zip-lock bags.

Now each tank has its own little feeding pack waiting, making things simple for my family while I’m away. 🐟🦐🌱

A big thank you to my two elder sisters for helping to look after my aquariums while I’m away on a 10-day vacation. ❤️

Living in a tropical country means water evaporates quite quickly, especially in my nano aquariums. While automatic top-up systems work well for larger tanks, setting them up for all 10 of my nano aquariums feels a little too much for me. 😆

So I asked my sisters to drop by three times during my trip to help top up the water. Since they’ll already be here, they might as well feed the tiny creatures too. 🦐🐟🌱

To make things easier, I even recorded this little tutorial video for them. Hopefully everything goes smoothly while I’m away!

The wild guppies rush in for their share, while the cherry shrimps patiently clean up every tiny pellet that reaches the substrate. Watching these tiny creatures go about their day never gets old. ❤️🦐🐟

I discovered that my fish pellets had completely spoiled after about 6 months of use in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. 😱

The pellets became damp, clumped together, and developed a strong unpleasant smell. To help keep fish food fresher for longer, I’m now storing small amounts in an airtight glass container and keeping the rest sealed separately.

Have you ever had fish food go bad before? 🐟🌱

A little maintenance goes a long way in a small Walstad tank. 🌱

Today was all about trimming Pearlweed, removing excess floating plants, cleaning up the tank, and giving the plants a fresh start. The wild-type guppies and Red Rili shrimp seemed to enjoy the makeover too. ❤️🦐🐟

Sometimes the most relaxing part of the hobby is simply spending time with the tank

There’s something oddly satisfying about watching shrimp gather for a meal. 🦐

A few tiny shrimp pellets, and within minutes the blue Neocaridina shrimp emerge from every corner of this low-tech, no-filter aquarium. Watching them forage and feast among the moss and driftwood never gets old.

The Rasboras Came to Check My Water Top-Up💧🐟🐟🐟

Curiosity is a big part of what makes these tiny fish so enjoyable to watch ❤️🐟🌱

During a quick water top-up in my low-tech, no-filter Walstad aquarium, the least rasboras gathered around the container I use to soften the water flow. Some even rode the gentle current as if they were investigating this strange new object that had appeared in their world.

It’s little moments like these that make aquarium keeping so rewarding 🙂

Duckweed may be tiny, but removing it can be surprisingly frustrating! 😅

One simple tool makes the job much easier: a comb. It helps avoid scooping up fish and shrimp, and there’s less chance of accidentally reintroducing duckweed back into the tank.

Finished clearing the surface, did a small water change, and added some Dwarf Water Lettuce and Red Root Floaters from my other Walstad tanks. 🌱🐟🦐

Plant trimming is next on the to-do list!
