Behind an alluring red door, tucked away down the winding alleys of Jalan Besar, lies a quaint little bar that seems to evoke a sense of nostalgia and uncanny familiarity in anyone who visits.

When you step in, you won't be able to help but notice the velvet curtains hanging down from the ceiling cracked and caving in, posters from a different time, and a face ominously watching your every move from above.

Be it sitting by the bar to get a drink of choice, or round the tables to soak in the sights and sounds, you might walk away with more than you asked for.

15 March 1986, 11:25am. A seemingly mundane morning became witness to Singapore’s deadliest civil disaster as in a mere 60 seconds, the New World Hotel collapsed into nothing but dust and rubble.

It was the very same morning where Rosa was pacing up and down her room, luggage barely packed, half her items still strewn across the table and floor. She was getting sweaty and anxious, steps filled with hesitance as she debated back and forth between abandoning her dreams for the stage or leaving behind the only person she ever loved.

Kiran never managed to see her again, but she still reminds him dearly of the first steps they took across the dance floor.

“Rosa, the air is thick with dust, it’s like being in a cloud”

The deep red glow from Kiran’s darkroom reminded him painfully of the flashing ambulances that surrounded the rubble which once used to be The New World Hotel, where he would look out from the 4th floor, hoping to see Rosa being brought out from under the debris.

Now, all he has are photos of them - they take up the walls until the paint can no longer be seen, then they string across the walls, hanging silently as the stillness echoes loudly the soul of two lovers.

He waits for the day she returns, and hopes to tell her about happy ever afters and the blue sky. He hopes to remind her about satay and beer, the seaside, dancing, and all the things to live for.

Come by the New World, where old dreams lie dormant, waiting for a chance to come alive. Only till 14 July.

Postcards from Rosa on her travels on the wall – yellowed. A pile of rejected film scripts in a box. Two empty glasses side by side on the kitchen counter.

Tucked away on the 4th floor was a love that sounded like soulful jazz and passionate rock and roll – two lovers who tried to build a new world together where it was safe to dream.

Now, it's a mere ghost of its past where dust cakes to the windows and sweet melodies only seem to haunt the corners of the rooms.

From a no man’s land into a wonderland, the bright lights of the cabaret call out to you. Only till 14 July.

The air is thick with jealousy, and filled with a low simmering anger. A staring incident would lead to a fight, which would lead to a shooting - that is the night style.

Kiran and Rosa's first meeting was rudely interrupted by an overzealous Felix the Boxer, who wanted her attention all to himself.

That eventful night which would lead to many more late night rendezvous now remains frozen in time as haphazard brush strokes on a canvas hung by Rowell Road.

From strangers to friends, friends into lovers, and strangers again.

Built in the 20s by the Ong brothers, the New World became the "first-class amusement park for all classes" and welcomed anyone with 10 cents to spare.
It was the most affordable form of entertainment and became the playground for Rosa and Kiran's many dates.

The amusement park saw through the many phases of their relationship - from the young love that bloomed on the dance floor, to the very last time that Kiran saw Rosa perform at the cabaret, before finally shutting its doors in 1987.

“Rose, Rose I love you with an aching heart
What is your future, now we have to part?
Standing on the jetty as the steamer moves away
Flower of Malaya, I cannot stay”

Once her mother’s lullaby, now known as the song which shot Rosa to fame - ”玫瑰玫瑰我爱你” (trans: Rose, Rose, I love you) remains as a timeless icon of the 70s.

Forever known for her powerful yet sultry voice, many forget that Rosa started off as a mere Taxi Girl at the New World. From the complicated Cha-Cha to the languid ballroom waltz, she was professional when it came to the dance floor.

Undeniably, her raw talent made her unstoppable.

Relieve the magic of the love that blossomed under the enthralling lights of the New World. 50% OFF for ALL tickets and merchandise, only till 14th July.

Despite her rising fame, and no matter how much she earned, Rosa remained her true to her humble and grounded beginnings. She didn’t believe in splurging or spending more than required.

Tucked away deep in her dresser, was a quaint red box passed down to Rosa from her mother - one of the last few items which she had from home. In it contained spare cash and receipts from every one of her expense, neatly organised by month, date and type of purchase.

Despite Kiran offering to help her out, she refused and only wanted to rely on herself.

Come by the New World to retrace the steps, and visit the old haunts of Kiran and Rosa through the winding streets and back alleys of Jalan Besar. 50% OFF for ALL tickets and merchandise, only till 14th July.

Who knew the sweet melody of "玫瑰玫瑰我爱你” (trans.: Rose, Rose, I love you), which was merely her mother’s lullaby, would one day come to carry on her legacy as The Songbird of The New World.

Rosa left for Singapore in the 50s wanting to seek a fresh start. With nothing to her name, in a foreign land with no friends, singing was all she had. Left without a choice, she spent her nights at the cabaret as a Taxi Girl dreaming to one day be in the spotlight.

It was not until she caught the eyes of Mr Foo, millionaire tycoon, who offered her the gig which shot her to stardom and the rest is history.

Swing by the cabaret and grab yourselves a pair of headphones to experience a night of love and loss through the eyes of two ill-fated lovers. 50% OFF for ALL tickets and merchandise, only till 14th July.

Kiran was the kind of person that would allow his passion to consume and overwhelm his life - spending every pocket of free time studying films frame by frame, picking out every single detail and camerawork which caught his eye.

He was obsessed with the way each film could become their own world, both a flawless fantasy and his escape - and he wanted to do just that. Every page of his notebook started to fill with a make-believe worlds, imagining Rosa as the main character in every single one, be it as the heroine, the villain or the damsel in distress, and he would be by her side through it all.

Escape to the New World for a night to experience the nostalgia and wonder of what Singapore has to offer. 50% OFF for ALL tickets and merchandise, only till 14th July. Book now!

They say that you can tell a lot about a person from the contents of their wallet.

Amongst his faded ticket stubs, driver’s licence, and the last $12 to his name, Kiran always made sure to keep some loose 50 cent coins so he could pay for a dance with Rosa at the New World - just in case if he accidentally squanders the rest of his cash away.

And tucked away in a special compartment, was $10 and a note from Rosa - showing him that only she knew him like no other.

Experience a slice of the 60s for a night and dream of a bygone era before us, only at New World’s End. 50% OFF for ALL tickets and merchandise, only till 14th July, book now via our link in bio!
