Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble A Javanese Gamelan Community in Singapore, supported by the NUS Department of Southeast Asian Studies

Formed in Jan 2004 by Associate Professor Jan Mrรกzek and assisted from 2012-2023 by Thow Xin Wei, the groupโ€™s primary activity is weekly latihan (practice sessions) where they learn, socialise, and relax to music. These are free and open to the public, with no musical experience necessary. The ensemble has previously performed at Esplanade, Malay Heritage Centre, St. John's Island, and at Institut

Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. The group has also worked together with Javanese musicians, puppeteers, and dancers, most notably for Ki Purbo Asmoro, Didik Nini Thowok, Rianto, Ki Aneng Kiswantoro, Ki Catur Benyek Kuncoro, Angger Widhi Asmara, and Anon Suneko. In Singapore, Singa Nglaras has collaborated with Gamelan Asmaradana, Bhaskarโ€™s Arts Academy, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Ruanatworkz, and Skala. Our rehearsals are free and open to the public: you don't have to be staff or student of NUS to join. We meet every:

FAQs ๐Ÿ’ญ

1. What are the different types of sessions?

There are 3 types of sessions:
- Latihan Singa Nglaras, open rehearsal sessions where our ensemble members will be doing more advanced repertory. Anyone with medium-advanced experience is welcome to join playing, and everyone is welcome to watch or listen to the music.
- Beginner sessions, intended for anyone with little to no experience. Participants are encourage to attend as many as they can, but they don't need to attend all of them.
- Moderated themed discussions, where we'll have casual discussions related to gamelan interpersed with music making. It's open for everyone.

2. Do we need to register for the sessions?

For beginner sessions, please register by sending us a DM.
You don't have to register for the latihan sessions (on Tuesdays and other days marked as "Singa Nglaras").

3. What are the moderate themed conversations about?

We are excited to be taking part in the opening of โ€œOf Thousandโ€, a solo exhibition by Jompet Kuswidananto, presented by Ames Yavuz. The exhibition debuts a new concept and research project by the artist on the romusha and the Saketi-Bayah railway. Steels rails and wooden sleepers from its original site are transformed into gamelan musical instruments and prayer beads, to create a resonant space for the echoes of the erased to linger.

In celebration of the opening, we will be doing a special performance with the artworks, together with the artist. See you there!
