Bacolod-based artist Frelan Gonzaga likes to shine a light on the invisible ones, those who are everywhere but are mostly unseen and unheard.

“I realized early on with my art practice that I wanted to highlight the “unimportant” people in our society, specifically in Negros. It’s what I saw growing up playing on the streets with my friends in our neighborhood here in Bacolod,” says Frelan, who also goes by the nickname Pakz. “In this painting I just wanted to show the traditional way of life of the lowly Sacada, whose system of work has pretty much stayed the same for over a hundred years.”

These consumerist times, however, haven’t spared even those who could otherwise feel remote. He adds, “Naturally we always think that ‘the grass is greener on the other side’. With the fast-paced world of the internet and the social media, everyone wants to be ‘in’. So a man can only dream until he gets what he wants.”

There’s a lot of unpack in this powerful piece, part of ad/vantage, an art show, currently on display at Orange Project, Art District, Bacolod City, until 20 October.

We were thisclose to booking a tattoo session with Billy Boy Abonado Jr, but the ad/vantage group show opening night on September 20 was such a fun party and we'd had lots of wine and top-shelf spirits, so we did the wise thing and bookmarked that as something to do next year (at VIVA ExCon 2020, maybe?).

In the meantime, catch two works by this multi-hyphenate creative at the ongoing ad/vantage, an art show, currently on display at Orange Project, Art District, Bacolod City. Show runs until 20 October.

There’s something inspiring, instructive and downright magical about Guenivere Decena investigations into the Self through her art. Consider it a beautiful-to-look-at and eloquent meditation on how to navigate your circumstances, whatever they may be.

We had the pleasure of listening to Guen articulate her art and process at ’s pre-opening talk, a casual one-hour conversation that included collector Don Kusuanco and artists Charlie Co (CharlieAnn Co, Pakz Gonzaga and Karina Broce, and you can still see her piece, “You Are A Universe, Keep Yourself Together”, at Orange Project.
