Thank you for joining us at the launch last weekend! ✨ Hope you caught a glimpse of Tabib Hoo () and Tabib Zat (.arif) while they were in town. 👀 With Tabib Ha () in spirit, of course..

For now, the tabibs have left the building.🦜 And the island. Licensing issues, permit non-recognition, and so on. Just the usual resistance that good remedies tend to attract. 🥥 Perhaps, you could even say that this friction is not incidental, but central to how the practice operates?

Anyway! They’ve moved on, but some remedies and concoctions are still circulating online, informally, beyond the reach of the appropriate forms. 🌴

They describe themselves as traditional healers. Sometimes aspirational political candidates. Mainly they are a midlife crisis support group. TTHHZ makes art about the things that creep up on you, like the stuff you laugh off but can’t quite shake.

A NEW REMEDY HAS ARRIVED. “Ubat Tolak Bala” (Medicine to Ward Off Misfortune) by Tiga Tabib HooHaZat (), a collective comprising Hoo Fan Chon (), Hasanul Isyraf Idris (), and Izat Arif ()

FEELING OFF LATELY? Formulated by the three tabibs, Ubat Tolak Bala takes the form of a special ointment, prepared according to the healing traditions of ilmu Nusantara and techno-mystical enhancement. Presented as a ready‑to‑use wellness product, it offers relief for various conditions that surfaces as unease or imbalance. Framed with the confidence of commercial remedies and the appeal of inherited knowledge, the ointment leans on suggestion, ritual, and trust to do its work. Both the affliction and its treatment remain deliberately open, inviting belief without insisting on certainty.

LIFE IS HARD BUT SO ARE YOU! Join us on launch day (Sat, 16 May, 2–5PM) for a special appearance by two of the three tabibs, who will be present to introduce the medicine and share its intended use.

The durational activation sees the artist handle photos of live animals displayed in seafood restaurants, where he carefully hand-cuts the form of the animal out. The meticulous labour ends with the cut-outs drifting onto the floor, leaving the emptied tank is preserved.

Life release 放生 is a traditional Buddhist practice where individuals release animals held in captivity with the intention of saving their life. Growing up Buddhist, 𝘔𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘎𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 draws upon the artist’s childhood experiences, reflecting on the way human consciousness shapes itself around non-human life, and how non-human life is shaped around human consciousness thereafter.

Contemplating on the sublimity of the unknown sea, [[[𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘥]]] reflects on the anthropocentric tendency to mediate natural experiences through organisation—choosing only to encounter the ocean through aquarium glass. Translating this into repetitive gestures, Luna enacts their human will in imposing order onto water. Over multiple days, they oscillate through the comfort of control and the labour of structure; a structure they eventually pry off the wall in a show of cathartic futility.

Luna and Guang here—thank you to everyone who joined us for the Opening Free Snack Day and Paper Flesh () collage workshop this past week! Starting the show off with a near-empty space, we’ve been working hard in activating both of our durational works to gradually fill the walls and floors of I_S_L_A_N_D_S.

While this format is a bit unconventional (and experimental for both of us), all of your open-mindedness has encouraged us to continue developing and evolving the space! It’s also helped us reflect on the conversations we’ve had with everyone and learn from the time we’ve spent with our artworks.

We’re excited for the interactions yet to come in the weeks ahead! If you’ve already visited 𝘍𝘢𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘚𝘦𝘢, we invite you to return during our coming activations to witness how the space has changed since you left!

Hi guys, Luna () and Guang () here taking over the I_S_L_A_N_D_S Instagram account! We have officially moved into the space and activated our artworks for the first time yesterday, thank you to everyone who managed to drop by!

Over the next few weeks, the both of us will be hard at work, transforming the exhibition space with our individual activations.
