Placeholders Art Festival

Placeholders Art Festival Placeholders: Where art and social responsibility collide Date: 16 & 17 December 2017
Address: 4 & 10 La Salle Street
Time: 10am – 9pm

Placeholders is an arts festival that aims to engage the community to reflect on what it means to be “place holders” amongst displaced individuals and families alike during the Christmas season. Join us for two exciting days of live music, an Escape Room, and a variety of art — including themed prints, installations, jewellery, stationery, and craft. Foodies can also enjoy a hearty feast from food

stalls such as The Fish Schnack, Springleaf Prata, Meet & Melt, and more. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards Kampong Siglap Lifeskills Training & Retreat Centre, an initiative by New Hope Community Services, a volunteer welfare organisation that provides shelter for the homeless.

One more day to go! We can’t wait to put up a show for you this weekend. Here’s a sneak peek at these food miniatures by , which she’ll be showcasing at Placeholders Arts Festival.

“Being a real big food lover, I mainly do food miniatures, and especially like to work on local delicacies.

三菜一汤 — Homecooked Comfort features a few dishes that my grandma and mother often cook. As I reflect on the theme of 'refuge', I realise that it is indeed a blessing to be able to share a lovingly prepared homecooked meal, in the comfort of our homes and in the company of our family.”

5 questions with illustrator and graphic designer Toh Bee Suan ahead of Placeholders Art Festival this weekend:

1. What inspired you to pursue art?
This is a question I ask myself often. Why do I create when I compare myself with others and feel inadequate? That said, creating does make me feel less worthless of my being. Recently, I’ve been motivated to just nurture my skills, no matter how good or bad the outcome is.

2. What does the term 'refuge' personally mean to you?
Refuge means having peace in my heart. I understand it as the sense of gratefulness and peace when I lay down in a comfortable space to sleep every night. I was playing with the idea of comfortable spaces and how babies feel in a cot.

3. Tell us more about the art you're putting up at Placeholders Arts Festival.
I think about the space where I rest every night and relate to a baby feeling secure and comfortable in their cot. I like the feeling of being in water and am fascinated by sea creatures. My installation is quite straightforward actually, to recreate a space for anyone — especially for those with an inner child — to come to rest. In the larger sense of things, i think what I’m trying to mimic is also God's grace to us, his invitation for us to go back to him.

4. What do you hope to see more of in the arts scene in Singapore?
It's really exciting for the art scene to be picking up, but I’ll like for things that are non-mainstream to have more opportunities to be showcased, and to be accepted commercially. There's always this struggle in finding the balance for my work to be "well-liked" but also to be different from what already has been done.

5. What are you most looking forward to at Placeholders Art Festival?
The first time we came to recce the space we immediately felt the sense of familiarity like how our campus (Lasalle at Winstedt) used to be like. I didn’t think I would exhibit since I graduated but it's particularly exciting to be using this space to showcase together with my close friends from school — and for a good cause! And yes, prata too!

A conversation with artist Lee Wan Xiang

“Refuge, to me, is a place I can run to and hide in. In the book of Psalms, I've always been drawn to how the Psalmist calls God his place of refuge and strength. Safety is so important for people. We were made to be known and loved. God is for the bruised reeds. I find the word “refuge” a comforting notion that one day would become reality.

I’ll be showing some works I've made around themes of 'refuge' from 2016. Back then, I was already drawn to the concept of 'shelter' and 'refuge' so it's quite apt for this show too. I like working with materials that have been cast aside, such as cardboard and scraps.”
