Teater Ekamatra

Teater Ekamatra A contemporary theatre company that aims to be at the heart of theatre.

Helmed by award-winning director and performer Mohd Fared Jainal as our current artistic director, we have lived out our vision of being at the heart of theatre, by staging daring multilingual works that address social issues such as encounters across race and religion. Teater Ekamatra has been commissioned by notable international arts festivals, such as the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, Man Sing

apore Theatre Festival, and Esplanade Studio Series. Our productions have also won numerous accolades, especially at Singapore’s highest platform for excellence in theatre, the Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, where our trophies include Best Original Script for Kakak Kau Punya Laki in 2014 and Charged in 2011, and Best Original Script and Best Actress for Nadirah in 2010. In addition to our mainstage offerings, Teater Ekamatra supports the continued development of young artists through our merEKA and Playwright Mentorship programmes. Guided by our values of diversity, inclusivity, integrity, accountability and people-centredness, Teater Ekamatra is committed to our mission of creating engaging theatre that inspires, as well as incubating emerging talents and expanding diversity within the industry. Established in 1988 by Lut Ali and Rubie Lazim, we have grown from strength to strength with a reputation for provocative and innovative productions that have expanded the repertoire of local and regional theatre. In 1999, Teater Ekamatra became the first Malay theatre group to be awarded a one-year grant by the Singapore National Arts Council (NAC). In recognition of our potential as “a promising company with sound artistic leadership,” Teater Ekamatra has since also received the NAC’s prestigious Annual Arts Grant, various Major Grants, and the Capability Development Grant for our education and outreach work.

Hey guys, Azura here! ❤️

I spent the day interviewing people in my kampung to ask them a few questions for an assignment. Thought it would be chill… but nope!

And I think I might just have caused a little chaos… 😬

We are thrilled to share our 2026 merEKA programmes!

Our development programmes are built to spark bold ideas, deepen craft, and strengthen collaboration across the community, no matter where you are at in your artistic journey!

The Playwrights Development Programme returns with Critical Introduction to Malay Theatre by Alfian Sa’at for theatre lovers. And for aspiring playwrights, we introduce the Writers Lab, where you can learn from established playwrights and develop new work with guidance and feedback.

For those drawn to production and arts leadership, our Arts Managers Development Programme features Technical Management 101 by A Kumaran and Introduction to Arts Management by Shaza Ishak to equip you with practical skills and industry insight from invited guests.

Performers can also deepen their craft as Acting 101 and Acting 201, returns, led by Rizman Putra.

We also welcome new residents Juan Camilo Riaño Rodriguez and Ruby Jayaseelan, alongside continuing artists Aida Sa’at, Mysara Aljaru, and Kristian Marc James Paul, as they develop their work with us this year.

Our merEKA programmes are free and open to the community, because we believe learning and creative development should be accessible to all. While participation is free, running these programmes takes time, care, and resources. We encourage making a donation to help support our artists and sustain these programmes!

Mark the dates and stay tuned for registration details!

Munah Bagharib steps into the role of Hanie, a woman who opens a shop and accidentally rattles an entire village.

Hanie returns to Kampung Bras Basah to take over her late grandfather’s shop lot with a simple plan: start a business and get on with life. Her idea? La Luna, a lingerie shop that is bright, bold, and impossible to ignore.

Calm, confident, and used to doing things her own way; Hanie has no interest in asking for approval. At first, the village tries to shut her down. Then, curiosity wins. Women begin slipping through her doors, and La Luna slowly becomes a place where people linger, laugh, and speak a little more freely.

All she wanted was to run her business in peace. Instead, she might have sparked a little (or a lot of) drama.

Welcome to Kampung Bras Basah! A village that has always known how to keep itself in check.

Lines are drawn, roles are known, and order holds everything in place. It is a world that feels steady and predictable. That is, until a small shop turns on its lights.

With the arrival of La Luna, women begin to gather. Laughter slips out from behind closed doors. Questions that once felt dangerous rise to the surface. In a space no larger than a storefront, a change begins.

And watching it all unfold is a young girl, learning how a village can change when someone dares to imagine it differently.

This April, an all-star cast brings to life a new stage work inspired by M. Raihan’s acclaimed 2023 film. By turns hilarious and piercing, La Luna confronts the contradictions between conformity and desire, belief and freedom, with humour and heart.
