I'm a fan of buying art supplies, just like everyone else. I'd conservatively estimate that I have over 350 paints from more than 15 brands. Is 'Less is More' just a myth? As a watercolour painting teacher, I need ample supplies for my workshops. However, when working on my own paintings, I stick to 4 to 6 colours. This limited palette helps me master the colour mixing process, allowing me to work quickly and with certainty. The result is cleaner colours and a distinct colour harmony. Buying watercolour paints can be fun, but I feel that using fewer colours often leads to better art. What do you think? Let me know your favourite colours in the comments. I'm biased towards PB15:3, PR122 (Less Fluorescence), and PY3.

Today's demos

Everyone in class agreed that session 5 is the most fun. Why? It's a turning point. Students begin to understand what it means to stop colouring, and start collaborating with the paint.

Don't let your paper hold you back! Many watercolour beginners struggle because their paper isn't doing the job. It's not about breaking the bank, it's about finding paper that's right for the job. Find one that is durable, offers some leeway for correction and helps with some water control. The paper I recommend to my beginner students is the Hollandse cellulose/cotton paper. It offers good performance for the price point.

What’s your favourite student and artist paper? Share with me in the comments 🙂

After 10+ years of teaching, I see students fall into the "repetition trap" every single day. They show up, paint the same way, and puzzle over why they aren't seeing progress.

That's because, practice doesn't make perfect. Practicing the same mistakes over and over again, makes them permanent. No wonder there's little improvement.

Learn smarter. Practice smarter.
If you know the "why"s, you'll understand the "how"s.

Which slide resonated with you the most? Let me know in the comments!

The Lines series 2018
The same lines that connect us
Divide us.

-----------------

Can you figure out how a watercolour piece is done? How do you deconstruct a painting and then build it up in different steps? That is one of the core skills that I cover in my Watercolour Demystified Workshop, and it's the one that empowers you to paint almost anything! Come learn with me!

Last spot for my private class starting Saturday 31 Jan. Message me for information and quote [FBFAN26] to score a discount on registration.

This ceramic bowl is my iteration of a Chinese Tianqi ( 天啓) porcelain or ko-Sometsuke (古染付け). This is a technique that originated in China in the 17th Century and was a style that was expecially treasured in Japanese tea ceremony culture then.

I first hand built this bowl and bisque-fired it. Next I sketched in pencil and painted using a blue underglaze. Lastly, I applied a transparent glaze over it and fired it again.

The base of the bowl has a rustic foot ring reminiscent of a bunch of chopsticks signifying "Strength in Unity". The illustrations show a Lion, the Singapore skyline and a Vanda Miss Joaquim, celebrating the story of Singapura and SG60. Inside, a Peranakan rose tile reflects my roots as a KimGek from a school founded by Peranakan leaders like Song Ong Siang and Lim Boon Keng (who co founded OCBC!)

This is available via OCBC Works of Kindness at the Clayfestival Singapore.
