19–20 August 2025: Kiruna Church Is Moving – A Historic Cultural Event
On 19–20 August, the beloved wooden church of Kiruna will be moved 5 km to its new location—one of Sweden’s largest and most symbolic building relocations.
Kiruna Church, built in 1912 and designed by Gustaf Wickman, is considered one of Sweden’s most beautiful buildings. Its architecture blends National Romantic style with elements from Sami design and Norwegian stave churches, reflecting the cultural richness of northern Sweden. The interior is warm and wooden, with a unique simplicity—just a single cross to symbolize unity and openness.
Due to ongoing mining beneath the city, much of Kiruna is being relocated—including its spiritual heart, the church. It will be transported in one piece, at about 0.5–1 km per hour, along with its bell tower.
The two-day event, “The Great Church Walk”, will be a public celebration featuring concerts, Sami performers, live commentary, and activities in the town square. Around 10,000 people are expected to attend.
