What Now?
I started to get into boardgames, playing mostly with my son and step-son. Pretty smart guys of 10 and 12 who would give me a real match in Dominion and Blood Rage. As things go we started buying more and more games, using heavier and heavier stuff, soon finding ourself with Sword&Sorcery, Gloomhaven, Level 7 and the likes, totally loving it! And I also started playing solo games when the kids were not around or not interested.
But we did have some problems:
* Frequent breaks for food, rest, sleep, school, work.....often in the middle of a round or turn.....and then trying to get back in the game we would ask ourselves - what now?
* Having a complex solo game up and running on a table, the game could last for many days, but the problem was the same the next day - what now?
* Too many games. Our shelf kept growing, we would play a game a couple of times, then wanting to try “that new game”. Problem was, then we wanted to play one of our old games and had to read most of the manual again to find out the flow of the game.
* Resources & tokens, niiice, but they keep floating around in for example Terraforming Mars, we would like to keep them nice and tidy in our player area while playing!
* Those extra abilites and powers, we kept forgetting to use them! We needed some way to draw our attention to the fact that its now Night Time or you have an ability that lets you interfere in other peoples turns or you have a shield agains magic that has not been used this turn or this card always give you one more dice, well you get the problem....
* Minis, we love minis, but we dont love moving minis on a map when they have 3 hearts under them. We also dont love trying to figure out with Zombicide guys are Runners... sliiiightly more pointy nose!?
We printed out player aids found online, but ususally they were not what we wanted. So, we started making player aids, helpers and indicator etc for ourselves, noticing that they helped us play better, easier, faster, to be able to play more since we could play 30min before food and then continue, to play more different games since we could get into the game flow of games we once knew in a snap, to play complex games solo over several days.
The tools we made ourselves really helped!
