Food is much more than nutrition. Mealtime rituals and ways of preparing food contain the traditions and the identities of a culture, community, family. Food carries symbolical values and is a means of cultural representation and exchange. Through food we can get to know others, it is usually one of the first ways of contact with another culture.

Food traditions are not set in stone, they evolve in contact with others. They become richer and more interesting, taking on new meanings and identities. It is a good reminder that what we think has always been the same and shouldn’t change - actually is a result of change, one that happened many years ago.
For example, tomatoes came from Latin America and became accepted in the Mediterranean cuisine after people made sauce with it - making it something that is easily absorbed into the traditional way of cooking and eating.

For me tomato sauce is connected to childhood summers. One year when I was in Mexico, after some 7 years of living in Sweden, I bought tomatoes at a local market. When I started chopping them - I noticed juice dripping from them into the bowl - it made me cry because I realized I hadnät even noticed how long it’s been since I’ve eaten tomatoes like those. During this period I started becoming aware of all the other things (not only food related) that I had taken for granted and am now starting to miss more and more living in another, very different culture. So I started to make up for all those - in the kitchen. I brought plates and bowls (and textiles), both from Mexico (my husband's home) and Croatia. I started making traditional holidays recipes that my grandmother used to make. Together with my husband we started inviting people over for Mexican dinners. Our kitchen became a place for gathering, creating community and feeling of belonging.

🪡 this is why I am doing Threads&Rituals workshop where we explore traditions, rituals, feelings of home, belonging, nostalgia and how we deal with them... more info on the link in bio! ☕️

After 7 sun & sea-soaking weeks in my hometown at the Adriatic coast of Croatia - I am back to Stockholm and ready for the new season.

I have missed the embroidery gatherings, the coming together of women - some come often and get to know each other, some come for the first time and end up feeling at home. I love how working with some fabric and threads, together with the cosy space and all of our energies coming together - always magically creates an athmosphere of spontaneity, creativity and acceptance (of ourselves and others).
Right there and then, we reconnect with ourselves outside the usual life chores and expectations, and connect with each other through conversations intertwined with the threads.

Welcome to september events!

Embroidery cafés are about coming together, meeting new people or seeing some familiar ones - some are beginners, some experienced, some already have a project and some need inspiration to start a new one. We sit and embroider together, sharing inspiration and tips with each other, but also sharing our stories and connecting with each other, while reconnecting to ourselves with the help of needle and threads.

THREADS & RITUALS - stitching the feelings of home

What does home feel like? What tastes, smells, sounds bring you back home?
The feelings of home can be related to a place, a person, a smell, a taste, or a ritual. What rituals do you carry with you and what new rituals did you create to recall the feeling of home?

In this embroidery workshop we will explore the topics of home, belonging, memories and traditions and how they relate to our present moment, to here and now. We will focus on dishes or rituals related to food making, eating and sharing. It can be a specific ingredient, recipe or a ritual that can be as simple as having coffee. You will embroider something that reminds you of home and that can be the comfort you sometimes need.

INCLUDED:
All materials needed (including materials you need to bring home in case you don’t finish embroidering)
Guidance through the (embroidery) process
Coffee/tea & kanelbulle
(Other food & drinks are available for you to order separately at the bar)

We start at 17:30 with grabbing fika, settling into the space, looking through inspiration materials - with an introduction to basic stitches for those who don’t have previous experience.

At 18:00 after we all gathered and settled, we start exploring the workshop themes and sharing our experiences. Then we go into choosing ideas and starting the projects. During the embroidering conversations continue … intertwining with the threads.

Location: Bar 175 (2Home Hotel Apartments-Solna) - Råsundavägen 175, Solna
Time: 17:30 (18:00) - 20:00
Price: 450 kr (incl. materials & fika)
