Three laureates were celebrated in 2023: Arvo Pärt, Angélique Kidjo, and Chris Blackwell. Arvo Pärt’s music, often likened to “white light,” distills sound to essentials; his tintinnabuli language draws on sacred traditions and a strict inner logic. Angélique Kidjo is a restlessly inventive artist, singing in multiple languages and pairing music with activism, including the Batonga Foundation. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, has for half a century invested in uncompromising artists and dissolved borders between genres.
