“Church – the brainchild of Joe Washington – were a band both lucky and cursed to be a child of the seventies.
Lucky, because they were one with a wave of community activism, uplifting messages and of a time when music mattered the most.
Cursed, because destiny and perhaps those same times would have it their tight musical output was overlooked.
Soul music and funk from the mid sixties to circa 1980 were so ridiculously rich that arguably the vast majority of the best-selling releases of that era have aged like fine wine, but it is also a time from which an uncountable amount of gems are still waiting to resurface.
Church’s only single just did. They happened to drop their simply hypnotic single “How Long” b/w “Da Da Song” in the same year as Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, Diana Ross’s eponymous Diana, and when the Black music mainstream shifted gear to jump on the disco bandwagon. Church on the other hand sounded like kindred spirits of Sly & The Family Stone in an alternative timeline, decidedly not so much disco but rather of a time where the music was even more focused and stuck to the nitty gritty, no additives.”

Release party last night in Stockholm for “How Long / Da Da Song!” It was a great night with really good vibes and deep conversations about the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., MLK Day and its origins, music’s important role in the civil rights movement, and much more. Great music played & new connections made.

If you are like many of us outside of LA and would like to donate directly to a great cause, Eric Reed Poppa Reed, award winning jazz pianist, is organizing a relief concert. If you can’t attend, you can still donate! See the event page for more information. All proceeds will go to Jazz musicians impacted by the L.A. fires.

The World Stage is a non-profit organization currently run on 100% volunteer energy, and exists only with support from the community. In order to continue to serve the community and build upon our mission through educational programs and performances, we are in need of additional support.

Everyone at AYO is heartbroken to see the ongoing devastation caused by the fires in LA. We feel helpless as we watch family, friends, colleagues, clients, and strangers lose everything, but what we can do right now is support those raising funds and helping out on the ground.
