This October, Oslo Negativ [ON] returns to Nasjonalgalleriet for its sixth edition. As a longstanding participant and supporter of ON, one of Scandinavia’s most significant photography festivals, WILLAS has previously presented works by some of the medium’s most renowned artists at the festival, including Nick Brandt and Roger Ballen (2021), Helene Schmitz (2022), and Anton Corbijn (2025). This year, we’re proud to present the works of Finnish‑American artist Arno Rafael Minkkinen (b. 1945).

The sea does not wait.

Along the crumbling coast of western Jutland, concrete bunkers from the 1940s gradually fall into the sea. Over time, they have detached from the slopes; they are in a falling motion, and due to erosion, the Atlantic is slowly swallowing them.

Two works, one cycle.

Helene Schmitz studies the circularity that occurs where the limestone that makes up the cliffs along parts of the Danish coast is ground down and transformed into cement. The process contributes significant amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Rising sea levels necessitate protection against the encroachment of the sea and the crumbling land, which is rapidly eroding and being engulfed by the ocean at an accelerating pace. Seawalls, artificial islands, and concrete blocks are being built worldwide to shield humanity from the threat posed by sea intrusion. Thus, the circle is complete.

Studies in Falling and The Island has been on view at Palazzo Tiglio - A Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Chiesa di San Rocco, San Pancrazio, Bucine this summer.

Find a comfortable seat and close your eyes.

Take your pulse by touching two fingers to the top of your left wrist. Now stare at the photograph for ten minutes, letting go of all other thoughts. When you stare, resist the urge to blink. Your eyes will flood, and soon you will be crying like a little baby. Ayurvedic medicine uses this method as a way to cleanse the soul. Retake your pulse. Record the difference.

“The Other Mind: Roger Ballen. A Retrospective”
OPEN NOW! The world of Roger Ballen – unsettling, poetic and deeply psychological…

Roger Ballen has long been one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary photography, whose unsettling, poetic and deeply psychological work blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction, reality and dream, human and animal, sanity and madness. This retrospective, curated specifically for the Rothko Museum, presents his evolution from stark documentary realism to intricately staged, psychologically charged compositions.

The exhibition’s curator, Aivars Baranovskis, warns: “Ballen’s images are not meant to be understood – they are meant to be felt. They provoke, disturb and linger in the mind. This exhibition invites you to confront your own subconscious, to explore the other mind – the one we often ignore, but which Ballen fearlessly exposes.”

Warmest congratulations to wonderful Arno Rafael Minkkinen, who is named the recipient of Finlandia Foundation National's Artist of the Year 2026–2027.

Since 1969, Arno Rafael Minkkinen has focused his work on the self-portrait as a primary vehicle for expressing the human condition through images made in natural and urban landscapes. His photographs are based on the reality before the lens, photography at its purest, setting aperture and squeezing a shutter bulb or other self-timer device to fire the camera. Using himself as subject, so no one else comes in harm's way, he captures the beauty of being part of something bigger and more permanent than one's own naked self.

We have had the privilege of representing Arno Rafael Minkkinen since 2015, promoting his work through exhibitions at Fotografiska in Stockholm, Berlin, at Blowmqvist in Oslo, Sliperiet in Värmland, The Matchstick Palace in Stockholm, and at various artfairs. We are now planning a large presentation of his work in Oslo this autumn. More info to follow.

We are delighted to welcome Anton Corbijn to Sliperiet — our beloved "smultronställe" in the heart of Värmland.

Set in the beautiful surroundings of a historic old mill with a gourmet restaurant, this is a rare opportunity to meet one of the world's most celebrated photographers and filmmakers and to explore his exhibition Photographs.
Just 2.5 hours from Oslo and a little longer from Stockholm — well worth the journey.
