THE Right Eye Dominant PODCAST
- Jeff Cowen on seeing, making, and forty years in the darkroom
When I first encountered Jeff Cowen's work in 2014, standing in front of his large photograph of Alice, which was pinned to the wall in the living room Jim and Millie Casper of Lens Culture in Paris, I didn't have words for it immediately. Just a very clear feeling that something shifted.
That's still how it goes with Jeff. His photographs, handmade, analogue, built up through 40 years of darkroom practice, resist the kind of language we usually reach for. They're not about technique, though the technique is extraordinary. They're about something harder to name.
So I was genuinely happy to discover that the podcast Right Eye Dominant managed to draw him out in the way that very few interviewers do. He talks about his process, his years assisting Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson, the Provence Works project — and about seeing, which turns out to be the thing that holds all of it together.
