For the sake of the archive: Documentation of the exhibition Hymn that presented Jonathas de Andrade’s film O Peixe (The Fish) and Gavin Bryars’ musical composition The Sinking of the Titanic. Hymn was shown in peer’s previous space in december 2023.

de Andrade and Bryars share an interest in collective memory and, through widely differing practices and methods, they engage with history in works that move between reality and fiction. Both O Peixe and The Sinking of the Titanic take the tragic and the violent as their point of departure, yet place these elements in relation to a poetic mode of presentation that draws on the full potential of their respective media. Sound as a bodily experience, together with a continuously shifting repetition, constitutes central elements in both works, which in different ways approach our multilayered connection to history.

Thanks to Gavin Bryars, Ziella Bryars, Jonathas de Andrade, Emanuel da Costa, Adrian Kautsky, potatopotato.

Hymn was curated by Elias Kautsky and produced with support from Ideell Kulturallians.
