Ibland blir man glad på riktigt…lyssna på det här: Ljusfestivalen Island of Light startade på Smögen 2018 och arrangeras i år för sjunde gången. Med den bohuslänska naturen som fond och havet och himlen som backdrop har festivalen vuxit till en internationellt uppmärksammad ljuskonstfestival som genom åren lockat hundratusentals besökare.

Inför hösten hade Ellevio, som ansvarar för elförsörjningen på Smögen och i stora delar av Bohuslän, planerat att inleda viktiga arbeten på orten. Ledningar ska bytas, elnätet vädersäkras, kapaciteten höjas och svagheter som orsakat strömavbrott byggas bort. Nödvändiga insatser som ofrånkomligen innebär bök och störningar i stadsbilden.

När planerna nådde oss om att vägar in till festivalområdet skulle grävas upp samtidigt som årets festival inleddes (4–13 september), blev vi såklart oroliga. Skulle besökare kunna ta sig fram? Skulle arbetena påverka festivalen eller till och med äventyra elförsörjningen?

Naturligtvis förstår vi att stora infrastrukturprojekt kräver lång planering och inte låter sig flyttas på hursomhelst. Ellevio hade redan skjutit upp byggstarten med hänsyn till semestersäsongen, men häromdagen fick vi besked att arbetet inte kunde vänta längre. Åh nej…vilken krock!

Ellevios projektledare Rasmus Classon lyssnade på vår oro och satte sig i bilen och körde ut till Smögen för att träffa oss. Efter ett långt möte med öppna sinnen och en genuin vilja att förstå varandras förutsättningar kunde pusslande med budgetar, kollegor och entreprenörer ta vid. Tack vare Rasmus attityd och entreprenören Vattenfalls välvilja lyckades de skruva fram en lösning så att etapperna i projektet kunde kastas om.

Ellevio börjar helt enkelt sina arbeten på annat håll och vår festival kan därmed genomföras utan störningar från Ellevios arbeten.

En win-win-win då alla som är på väg att resa hit slipper extra köer, Smögen kan visa upp sig från sin bästa sida, de som skulle arbeta längs vägarna slipper onödigt intensiv trafik och alla vi som förbereder festivalen kan lägga vårt fulla fokus på att göra festivalen så fin, spännande och fantastisk som möjligt.

The artists have arrived, and artworks are being installed before the opening on Friday. One of the more spectacular ones seen today along the Smögenbryggan was the arrival, lifting, and positioning of the artistic sailboat 100% Sun Wind Water painted by graffiti artist Julia Maldonado from Mexico:

OCEAN ARTIVISM (No 100)

ENGLISH:

A salute to toxic-free coating and Ocean Art.
The 28-year-old graffiti artist, Julia from the island of Cozumel in the Gulf of Mexico, popped up in Stockholm in 2020. Our boat was offered to her as a canvas for art – with the condition to paint only with a new toxic-free coating available in only three colors – black, grey and orange.

Julia’s idea: Bring reality from the deep ocean to the surface so people can see and learn from it. We tend to look at the beautiful blue ocean with excitement, but turn away from what we do under the surface – killing it with overfishing, chemicals, trash, wastewater and sound pollution.

The art pinpoints the fact that toxic coating painted on millions of underwater hulls along our coasts for decades has shown hazardous consequences on marine biodiversity.

Julia:
"I was born and raised in a diving family and have seen my childhood coral reefs disappear. So, this artistic opportunity was very emotional to me, and I chose to mirror my experiences and the realities I've witnessed."

En hyllning till giftfri havskonst.
Den 28-åriga graffitikonstnären Julia från ön Cozumel i Mexikanska golfen dök upp i Stockholm. Hon fick vår båts skrov som en målarduk – med villkoret att måla med giftfri bottenfärg som bara fanns i tre färger – svart, grått och orange.

Julias idé: Att visa verkligheten från djuphavet upp på ytan så att människor kan se och lära av den. Vi tenderar ju att se ut över det vackra blå havet med entusiasm, men vänder oss bort från vad vi gör med det under ytan – att långsamt ta död på det med överfiske, kemikalier, skräp, avloppsvatten och störande ljud.

Exemplet lyfter frågan att giftig bottenfärg målad på miljontals skrov längs våra kuster under många årtionden har inte helt oväntat resulterat i allvarliga konsekvenser för den marina biologiska mångfalden. En fråga vi ville lyfta – med hjälp av konst.

Julia:
"Jag är född och uppvuxen i en dykarfamilj och har sett mina barndoms korallrev försvinna. Så den här konstnärliga möjligheten var väldigt känslosam för mig, och jag valde att spegla mina upplevelser och den verklighet jag har bevittnat."

A landscape of conversation
Every place has its own rhythm. The sea, the wind, stone, light, weather, living beings, and human presence never exist separately. What we hear, what we see, and what we are able to name, emerge through their continuous correspondence. Landscape is not what surrounds us. It is the form these relationships take.

This projection begins with listening. Not listening for sounds, but listening for the relationships that make a landscape possible.

Standing before a rock that has existed far beyond the scale of human history changes the way we understand presence. The rock is not a projection surface or a monument within the landscape. It is a material presence carrying a duration that exceeds human memory. It does not represent time. It carries time.

The projection does not reveal the landscape. It quietly shifts the conditions of perception.

Sound is not composed. It is already there. In water. In wind. In humidity. In temperature. In changing presence.

Light and sound do not describe the landscape. They become part of the conditions through which presence can be recognised.

I am inspired by local traditions in which listening was not a way of interpreting nature but a way of living with it. Folk songs, stories and seasonal rhythms grew from long relationships with particular places. They were not created outside the landscape. They emerged from within it.

Listening is therefore not about hearing nature. It is about recognising that we have never stood outside it.

A landscape of conversation.
For a brief moment, we recognise the conversation that has always been there.

SWEDISH:

Lyssna in.
Varje plats har sin egen rytm. Havet, vinden, stenen, ljuset, vädret, levande varelser och mänsklig närvaro existerar aldrig separat. Vad vi hör, vad vi ser och vad vi kan namnge framträder genom dess kontinuerliga interaktion. Landskapet är inte det som omger oss. Det är den form dessa relationer tar.

Denna projektion börjar med att lyssna. Inte lyssna efter ljud, utan att lyssna efter de relationer som gör ett landskap möjligt. Att stå framför en sten som har existerat långt bortom mänsklighetens historia kan förändra hur vi förstår vår närvaro. Stenen är inte en projektionsyta eller ett monument i landskapet. Den bär på en materiell närvaro med en varaktighet som överstiger mänskligt minne. Den representerar inte tid. Den bär tid.

Projektionen avslöjar inte landskapet. Den förändrar tyst förutsättningarna för uppfattningen. Ljudet är inte komponerat. Det finns redan där. I vatten. I vinden. I fuktigheten. I temperaturen. I en föränderlig närvaro. Ljuset och ljudet beskriver inte landskapet. De blir en del av de förutsättningar genom vilka vår närvaro kan kännas igen.

Jag inspireras av lokala traditioner där lyssnande inte var ett sätt att tolka naturen utan ett sätt att leva med den. Folkvisor, berättelser och årstidsrytmer växte fram ur långa relationer med specifika platser. De skapades inte utanför landskapet. De uppstod inifrån det.

Att lyssna handlar därför inte om att höra naturen. Det handlar om att inse att vi har aldrig stått utanför den.

In symbiosis with Smögen
Symbiosis is any close, long-term relationship between two different species.

My relationship with Smögen is one of enduring symbiosis. It began in 2019 through Island of Light and my collaboration with Dulce Sales Ahlberg, but over the years it has evolved into something more intricate. Year after year, this place calls me back to breathe its salt-filled air, to immerse myself in the water, to let the wind sweep through me, to reconnect with dear friends, and to continue my creative journey within the magical world of Island of Light. With every return, the roots grow deeper, while the branches continue to expand.

My new work for Island of Light 2026 emerges from this ongoing exchange, a living conversation between myself, the landscape, and the local community. It is a relationship that continues to inspire, transform, and nourish me.

I symbios med Smögen
Symbios – är en nära och långvarig relation mellan två olika arter.

Min relation till Smögen är en form av långvarig symbios. Den började 2019 genom Island of Light och mitt samarbete med Dulce Sales Ahlberg, men har med åren utvecklats till något alltmer mångbottnat. År efter år kallar platsen mig tillbaka för att andas den salta luften, sjunka ner i havet, låta vinden svepa genom mig, återse kära vänner och fortsätta min kreativa resa i Island of Lights magiska värld. För varje återkomst växer rötterna djupare, medan grenarna fortsätter att breda ut sig.

Mitt nya verk för Island of Light 2026 växer fram ur detta ständiga samspel, en levande dialog mellan mig, landskapet och det lokala samhället. Det är en relation som fortsätter att inspirera, förändra och ge mig näring.

One with nature.
Animism is the belief that the natural world is alive, conscious, and interconnected. Through projection, light, and movement, the work transforms the space into an immersive environment. Led by a Light Shaman, the audience is invited into a heightened state of attunement, where they become part of a living landscape.

Animism baseras på tron att naturen är levande, medveten och sammankopplad. Genom projektion av ljus i rörelse förvandlar verket rummet till en uppslukande miljö. Under ledning av en ”ljusshaman” bjuds publiken in i ett förhöjt tillstånd av inlevelse, där de blir en del av ett levande landskap.

Narcissus Privat Parking is connected to the mythological story of Echo and Narcissus. Moving light reflections in car mirrors, a soundscape in which delay plays a leading role, and elements that satisfy our need to see ourselves reflected. An installation about impossible love and fleeting encounters in a parking lot. Viewers visit the reconstruction of a crash that may or may not have happened.

ENGLISH:

Imagine something between wind, breath, and thoughts.
What if the night had dreams of its own - strange, glowing, and full of motion? Shining Fields invites you to experience that vision come to life.

Over 400 tall light reeds, arranged like wild stalks in an open field, pulse with shifting waves of color. A coordinated lightshow flows through the space, accompanied by a rich, layered soundscape. Light and sound move in sync, creating a calm and rhythmic atmosphere - something between wind, breath, and thought.

The reeds are placed in a natural, free formation, as if the landscape grew them on its own. From close up, the experience feels immersive and almost otherworldly. From a distance, the entire installation appears to glow and move, somewhere between reality and imagination.

Förnimmelse mellan vind, andetag och tankar.
Tänk om natten hade sina egna drömmar – märkliga, glödande och fulla av rörelse? Shining Fields inbjuder dig att uppleva hur visionen kommer till liv.

Över 400 höga “ljusvass-strån”, arrangerade som vilda stjälkar i ett öppet fält, pulserar med skiftande färgvågor. En koordinerad ljusshow flödar genom rummet, ackompanjerad av ett rikt, ljudlandskap. Ljus och ljud rör sig synkroniserat och skapar en lugn och rytmisk atmosfär – en förnimmelse mellan vind, andetag och tanke.

Vasset är placerat i en naturlig, fri formation, som om landskapet odlat det av sig självt. På nära håll kan upplevelsen kännas uppslukande och nästan övernaturlig. På avstånd verkar hela installationen glöda… och röra sig någonstans mellan verklighet och fantasi.

Swim in a river of light
The Immersive River is an interactive, immersive installation by Theodora Salti in collaboration with Andrew Scott, created for the Island of Light Festival in Smögen, Sweden. Blending responsive visual projections, ambient soundscapes, and elements of immersive theatre, the work transforms the surrounding landscape into a living river environment.

Guided by Árrotu, the River Spirit, visitors become part of the story through the senses of touch, sight, and sound, connecting them to the creatures that appear on the cliff before them. By interacting with tactile materials inspired by river creatures, they can influence the creatures' movement. As the story evolves, the river responds dynamically, creating a shared experience where humans, materials, and digital powers intertwine.

At its core, The Immersive River is an invitation to reconnect with the natural world through play, participation, and imagination. The installation encourages reflection on the beauty, fragility, and importance of rivers and the life they sustain, carrying a message of ecological awareness, care, and river protection.

I The Immersive River förvandlas responsiva visuella projektioner, omgivande ljudlandskap och det omgivande landskapet till en levande flodmiljö.

Vägledda av flodanden Árrotu, blir besökarna en del av berättelsen genom flera sinnen – känsel, syn och ljud, som kopplas till varelserna på klippväggen framför dem. Genom att själv interagera med taktila material, inspirerade av olika flodvarelser, kan du själv påverka varelsernas rörelser i installationen.

Berättelsen utvecklas av deltagarna och floden reagerar dynamiskt och skapar en gemensam upplevelse där mänskliga, materiella och digitala krafter sammanflätas.
