Tor Finn Malum Fitje

Tor-Finn Malum Fitje is an Norwegian artist currently studying his master degree at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Time based media constitutes the majority of his work, and at the center of his practice lies an interest of translations between mediums, and a fascination of the human urge to express something as something else. In recent works he has been concerned with poetic metaphors in science and the visualization of sound, working in the threshold of representation, where imagery turns into models and words become analogies.

In this two-channel video work, each sound and image represents components in an ever-increasing network of reversible meanings. Gradually changing their order, duration and connections, the artist aims to demonstrate the associative power of the word, as well as it´s shortcomings in conveying emotions. The two pieces meet and seemingly merge through it´s shared references. They form a sort of linguistic blueprint of one another and conjoined, they emerge as a dramatic poem, which main focus lies in the synthesis of immediate opposites.

RUINS IN THE DISTANCE
- A realtime audiovisual installation.

The title can hopefully act as a reminder of what all our efforts as a species and a society may amount to if we do not take the necessary precautions to safeguard against our own demise.

The audio component is based on a feedback network contained within a computer. This feedback is controlled and put through various timbral transformations by means of algorithmic composition. This means that a set of instructions governs the behavior of various parameters in the piece as it progresses over time.

The visual component is made up of black and white wireframe graphics. 40000 vertices are aligned in patterns derived from basic geometric shapes like spheres, planes and cylinders. They are animated in realtime based on analysis of the incoming audio.

'What will happen one day when hordes of emancipated slaves come forth from these dens of misery to swoop down on their unsuspecting fellow men?'

Astrid Gnoise (ES) and Petr Davydtchenko (RU/SE) present a two nights long performative exhibition Bron, Stockholm.

Work will include sculpture, film and a labour performance ongoing through the night until the UB club closes at 5 AM on both evenings.
