how i - as i full time knitwear designer, think you should approach your next project to get the results you long for!!
forget XS / S / M for a second. instead - find the finished garment measurements in the pattern. this is what you want to look at!
lay your fave sweater flat and measure: chest width x 2, body length and sleeve length. now you have something REAL to compare your next knitting project to.
your fave sweater might measure 110 cm around the chest, even though your body measure 95 cm. the extra 15 cm are called positive ease, and they are the reason as to why you like the fit.
if your fave sweater measures 110 cm - look for a size with the finished chest measurement somewhat around that!
well, obviously i do recommend that you follow most of the pattern. but when it comes to making the length of the body and sleeves i highly suggest that you knit them to your desired length and NOT what the pattern tells you.
once again - compare to your fave sweater! this will make a huge difference in how the sweater sits on your body and fit.
use the pattern as an instruction and guide - not as a set of rules you aren’t allowed to change!!
