Massive Passive never stops surprising me.
Listen to how that snare melts into the mix when the tubes engage at 2200Hz.

These days I mostly use the Massive Passive to enhance what’s already working and let precise digital tools handle the surgical cuts. However, this is a good example that tube warmth goes both ways.

That balance between analog feeling and digital precision is where things start to sound natural.

After a long hunt I finally found the Dynacord TAM-19 I’ve been looking for. Unfortunately for me, the seller had no respect whatsoever for gear. This unit is from 1978 and deserves to sit beautifully in a rack, in a loving home, and fl**ge things like it’s born to do.

Instead I got a piece of scrap metal, which only musical purpose is a maracas. And look at that bent corner on slide 2 - that’s some brutal force causing that.

The seller had a perfect score on Reverb and has been selling gear for 5 years, so I can’t even say ”lesson learned”. How can a seller pack a rare vintage unit, (which also was recently serviced!) like on slide 3. Completely loose, without any bubble plastic, paper or nothing. You don’t even send a pair of shoes like that!

Sometimes the low end in a premaster is technically too much. At the same time I hear the impressive bass and kick, so fat, punchy and energetic. I don’t want to flatten it just to satisfy a meter.

The dilemma = my job is to make the track translate and feel balanced, while still protecting the identity that made it exciting in the first place.

In these cases I conduct something that I want to call the ”Minimalistic Swedish Trick”.

Instead of cutting the bass, I work around it. A gentle push in the mids, especially around 820Hz on the Massive Passive where the tubes really open up, sometimes a touch around 1.5k too. Then the whole track comes down slightly in volume. And then later push into the mastering limiter for the volume to come back up.

The bass stays untouched, the energy stays intact.
But the track feels more balanced as a whole. 🔧

Feed it a healthy signal so it actually has something to grab. Once it’s moving right, I shape the rest around it.

EQ, transient shaping, a bit of drive, and a parallel space/stereo touch.

Listen to how that arpeggio synth melts into the mix with this outboard reverb.

This version of the Studer 169 mixer has two main outs, which allows me to record a separate 100% wet channel with its own EQ settings. I never have to worry if I recorded it to weak or to hot. I can always adjust the levels afterwards.

I do this on every channel in every project I mix.
Analog heart, digital brain. Full control.
