I genuinely thought I had zero pictures from all of the things that have happened this fall.

In fact, I didn’t realize so much had happened, and so fast.

I had worked so hard to climb out of burnout, that I had started treating my art business as a corporate job.

Wake up. Chug coffee. Inhale food. Work work work. Sleep. Repeat.

I had forgotten the real reason I left that lifestyle:

☕️ To sip that warm latte, instead of guzzling down anything with caffeine to fool my system into being active.
🥘 To really taste that stew that warms you up from the inside out, instead of buying a prepackaged salad to input nutrients while getting a few more tasks completed.
🍂 To watch to the leaves fall, instead of blue light screens that gave me endless migraines.
🪵 To smell the wood burning in a bonfire, instead of rubber grinding on conveyor belts so fast that they burn, just to manufacture more pointless consumerism.
.and finally:
🎨 To hear conversations about art, about the true meaning of life, instead of melodramatic power plays from one department to the next.

My commitment to art has been my commitment to feeling alive, in a world built to make you feel like you have to earn that right.

As if just existing here isn’t enough to have it.

I believe in this message so much, that instead of just showing you just a few fun things I did this fall, I want to remind you to take the time to really be alive, too.

You really only get one life, and you deserve to live it — not earn it.

Send this to someone who needs that reminder.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

I’m trying to be brave, but I don’t know what I’m doing.

Every blacksmith mangled their first iron rod to learn the techniques.

Every knitter has pulled out their yarn from the uneven loops they accidentally made.

Every potter has spun an asymmetrical mess off of their wheel.

And so, every muralist started with a dozen soapy rags to wash off their mistakes.

What does one do if they don’t know how to do something? Logic follows that you go do research, practice techniques, and learn.

Every craft starts somewhere. But that’s hard to remember when you’re watching seasoned artists after they’ve perfected the craft.

I’ve been really grateful for my friend Mitul Saxena coaching me on window painting all the way from India.

And Anthony Davis for giving me a kiln to practice with.

And Jenny Smith for encouraging me to return to fiber arts.

My art wouldn’t exist without the moral support of my friends, and the courage to just start.

If you need that support, give me a like, share, and/or follow. Let me be the friend that reminds you that you can do anything you set your mind to. 🦋

Mourning is an art, too. Or at least, it was.

THIS IS EMBARRASSING.

1. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A FINANCIALLY SAFE CAREER: I made international headlines for a Fortune 500 company that laid me off the same day the project was completed. Now I make more money as an artist than an engineer. If you’re willing to put the same amount of grind into your hobby as you would for a “stable” career, your hobby is guaranteed to be your career.
2. YOU CAN’T SERVE TWO MASTERS: Yes you can. You can do whatever you want as long as you are the master you’re serving. It’s not like a master only wants one task done. My favorite podcast host is also an autopsy tech, a best-selling author, and a mother. Her advice? You can sleep when you’re dead.
3. LOVE DOESN’T PAY THE BILLS: Yes it does. Someone who loves you will help support your basic needs unconditionally without asking for anything in return because they just want you to be happy. I’m not only talking about your partner, I’m talking about family and friends too.
4. TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS: No it doesn’t. I am actively healing my wounds. I earned my peaceful mind. I put blood, sweat, and tears into turning the pain into power. This is why the path to healing isn’t a straight line, it doesn’t follow time linearly. It follows what you put into it to heal.
5. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT: That’s false. You make your own luck. I know more than enough people who have unfair disadvantages that life just threw at them. You have to turn that into an advantage, and there’s no easy way to do it. Peace and happiness are more than just a choice. It’s an action.

Bonus 6th thing: It’s okay to do art just for fun, not just for money. Not every ounce of your existence needs to have some tangible reward or product at the end of it to be worth your time.

Do you agree?
