SAMPLING SECRETS: HOW TO TRANSFORM OLD SOUNDS INTO NEW WORLDS - with MOOSE DAWA

Sampling is an art form where the old becomes something completely new. Here, participants follow the process from crate digging and sample selection to finished production, and discover how creative methods can give the material a new identity.

Malmö, Sweden-based producer & DJ Moose Dawa has been active in the beat- scene since 2011 but first got some attention on his 2014 self-released Felia Mea EP along with the well-recieved follow up album "Reflekt" in 2018 through Chillhop Music. With a solid passion for crate-digging he transforms the sounds he find into sample-based instrumental hiphop with a lot of influences from jazz & soul, creating a nostalgic and melancholic atmosphere with his signature sound. He has worked with several established labels around the world such as Chillhop Music, Ninja Tune, Ninetofive Records aswell as Radio Juicy where his collaboration LP "Dreams From The Shore" with UK producer Psalm Trees was released. In the last quarter of 2024 he released his full-length album ”February Sepia” through Berlin-based label HHV Records, aswell as a 8-track concept album titled “Paramnesia” through Dezi-Belle Records.

Over the years Moose Dawa has established himself as a well-known name within the genre of instrumental hiphop with over 100 millions streams and has been getting attention internationally and locally with outlets and collaborations with Reason Studios, Sydsvenskan & P1 Kultur amongst many more. He has also been the opening act for international artists such as Slum Village, Homeboy Sandman, Ivan Ave & Black Milk. In 2023 he was also awarded with ”Music Of The Year” by the Swedish magazine Nöjesguiden. Moose Dawa is also the co-founder of the collective/label Alleycat Anthem which consists of different DJ’s, producers & artists from his hometown of Malmö.

Elin Piel is an electronic musician who, through improvisation, creates repetitive rhythmic soundscapes. Piel takes our hand and leads us through dreamlike paths and polyrhythmic textures. At times she rests in brightly shimmering ambient worlds, only to in the next moment rise and drift away into dark, pulsating clouds of unease.

In 2022, the album Satsuma Sunday was released on the Japanese label Muzan Editions. In 2023, Retina was released on Christoffer Berg’s label Rhythm Paint, and the full-length album Ingrid Linnea was released on Mystery Circles. In 2024, Vaka was released on Northern Electronics.
