Few compressors are as closely associated with punch, energy and cohesion as the API 2500+. Whether used to bring a drum bus forward, strengthen a mix or control dynamics without sacrificing impact, it can shape the movement of a recording while preserving its character.
The API 2500+ is a dual-channel stereo bus compressor that can be configured for stereo compression or used as two separate channels sharing the same compression settings. Its selectable attack, release, ratio and knee controls allow it to move between subtle dynamic control and much more assertive compression.
One of its most distinctive features is the choice between Old and New compression modes. Old mode uses a feedback design, with the sidechain responding after gain reduction, while New mode uses a feed-forward design in which the sidechain is fed directly from the input. These two approaches give the compressor noticeably different responses and make it highly adaptable across different sources.
The patented THRUST® circuit applies frequency-dependent filtering before the detector, reducing the influence of powerful low frequencies on the compression response. This helps kicks and bass retain their weight and impact rather than causing the entire signal to compress heavily with every low-frequency peak.
The 2500+ also adds a flexible Mix/Blend circuit for combining the compressed and uncompressed signals. Cross mode works as a continuous crossfader between the two, while Parallel mode keeps the uncompressed signal at full level and allows the compressed signal to be blended underneath it. This makes it possible to apply more noticeable compression while retaining the original transients, movement and dynamics of the source.
Together with its variable stereo linking, three knee settings and automatic or manual make-up gain, the API 2500+ offers detailed control over how a mix breathes, moves and hits.
