This Iaido got a hole new tsuka customization that includes: new tsuka core, samegawa, fuchi and kashira by Koden Tosogu 古伝 刀装具 and tsukamaki in hineri-maki style with Japanese black silk.

Two iaito renovations completed.

The top iaito in the pictures required a full check of the tsuka. This included cleaning and repainting the samegawa, deep cleaning of the menuki, and a new tsukamaki done in hineri-maki using black nubuck ito.

The iaito shown at the bottom required shortening and reshaping of the tsuka core, as it was too bulky for the user. The tsuka was reduced from 25 cm to 22.5 cm and significantly slimmed down by removing a substantial amount of wood from the core. It was then finished with a new tsukamaki in katate-maki using black silk ito.

Katana attributed to Daidō (NBTHK Hozon) Koshirae Project Completed.

This katana is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon certificate and is attributed to Daidō. The complete koshirae project has now been finalized.

Koshirae:
Executed in Higo style by Sergio Martins.

Tōsōgu:
Higo-style fittings by Manuel, Koden Tosogu 古伝 刀装具.

Tsuka:
Carved from honoki wood, fully wrapped in samegawa. Tsukamaki executed in tsumami-maki style using goat skin ito handcrafted by Sergio.

Saya:
Honoki wood core, wrapped in samegawa. Fitted with horn koiguchi and kurikata, and an iron kojiri.

Blade:
Koto period blade, dating to the Tenshō era (1573–1592).

The blade is unsigned but carries NBTHK Hozon papers attributing it to Daidō, a smith of the Mino tradition active during the late Muromachi to early Keichō period. His early name was Kanemichi; after receiving the kanji “Ō” (also read as “Dai”) from Emperor Ōgimachi, he styled himself Ō-Kanemichi. He later adopted the name Daidō and was granted the title Mutsu no Kami in Tenshō 2 (1574).

It is widely believed that Daidō served as the personal swordsmith to Oda Nobunaga. This theory is supported by the fact that he relocated to Kyoto contemporaneously with Nobunaga’s establishment of his residence there. Daidō’s oeuvre includes Jūyō Tōken, as well as documented joint works with Horikawa Kunihiro.
