THE LOOPERS Work in progress showing Breaking, hip-hop, house, locking, krumping and popping – street dance has gone by many names throughout history. Aggression and frustration over
oppressive social norms found a constructive and community-building outlet in street dance. Street dance was also a way out of gang crime. In Aloun Marchal’s new experimental dance and music performance, The Loopers, contemporary perceptions of violence and ways of resisting this violence are once again in motion. The performance’s first act begins literally on the street, in the bustling everyday urban environment. Looping song, dance and music: two experienced artists take possession of the public space with an expressive show and performance. In the second act of the performance, the audience is led indoors. The expressiveness is toned down. In an intimate and uninhibited setting, through dance and song, the performers share the street dance that once was, and still is, a major part of their lives. They also reflect on how they perceive and relate to violence. The floor is opened up for questions and discussion. Impossible? Hopeless? We should at least be open to the potential of art – to transform spirals of violence into dance in a loop.
The Loopers premieres in autumn 2026.
