Coming to The Aurora: 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada
Created by Giotto Bizzarrini, the engineering mind behind the Ferrari 250 GTO Series I & II, the 5300 GT was conceived as his ultimate evolution of the front-engined grand tourer.
Beneath its impossibly low, Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed aluminum body sits a modified high-output Corvette 327, positioned behind the front axle for a pioneering front-mid-engine layout and near-perfect 50/50 balance.
Chassis IA3*0281, presented in the Post-War Closed Elegance class of The Aurora Concours, is one of approximately 70 GT Strada examples built. Originally delivered in the elegant one-off combination of Azzurro Metallizzato over bordeaux leather, it was first registered in France on November 20, 1967.
Its early history includes delivery to René Maucort of Aix-en-Provence through Régis Fraissinet, Bizzarrini’s French representative and a Le Mans driver of the Iso Grifo.
A documented three-owner car, IA3*0281 underwent a meticulous 4,000+ hour restoration by Marciano Prototipi in Italy from 2016–2019, returning the car to its original blue exterior. In 2025, under current owner Doug Cohen, the interior was restored to its original bordeaux leather specification, completing the return to its factory presentation.
With nearly 400 horsepower, a 2,600-pound curb weight, and a top speed approaching 180 mph, the 5300 GT Strada was among the fastest road cars of its era — and remains one of the most charismatic Italian-American masterpieces ever built.
See it in the metal, June 26-28th in Båstad, Sweden.
