A beautiful painting and narrative. SWA member Kristine Nason will be exhibiting ‘Heroes’ at our annual exhibition next month, we’re looking forward to seeing it in the flesh along with many more wonderful works of art!

Heroes is a love letter to people of coastal Accra who organise in groups to clear clothing waste from the beaches. It tells a story about the environmental and economic damage of fashion overproduction and waste colonisation that I witness first-hand when I’m in Ghana.

Communities here, as in other regions of the Global South, are already carrying the weight of others’ excess, yet they unite to protect the coastline with determination and dignity.

I wanted this painting to hold both beauty and urgency: a quiet recognition of resilience, and a reminder that the unethical practices of governments and big businesses need to be called out.

I’m deeply honoured that ‘Heroes’ will debut at the Society of Women Artists exhibition at The Mall Galleries in June.

We are slightly obsessed with this new weaved creation from SWA Member

Tessa says:

My Delamore Medley… sights sounds, textures, colours, memories and so much more. A cloth story, to coin a phrase from

I chose to have a deck chair as my frame. Synonymous with an English garden. To use cloth and hand made yarns as my ‘paint’. A nod to women’s battle in the art world, a gentle protest. To draw my story and love affair with with yarn, weaving the thoughts and creating an impression of my connection and relationship of over a decade. Thank you for your constant support, through thick and thin, in sickness and in health!

I had a marvellous day, lots of conversations with lovely people and my piece was recognised and understood by all. To top it all, I won second prize! Very chuffed. Thank you and the marvellous Stephen Fremlington from whom I always learn and much admire. A perfect choice as Competition Judge 🙏🏻
