The Threads That Bind vol. 1 brings together both celebrated and new creative artists and craftspeople from diverse disciplines, their unifying thread being the book and associated fine and applied arts. The book is in essence made from simple materials which, in the hands of skilled artisans such as papermakers, printers, illustrators and bookbinders, are transformed into a multidisciplinary, multicultural object. Though their work does co-exist within the book, the work of individual artists and craftspeople are also celebrated as fine and applied arts. For artisans, their working practice is not just confined to the dedication of acquiring and mastering skills for making, it is the undefinable undercurrent that could best be described as passion. Though passion is elusive, being neither learnt nor acquired, for the artisan it is the key element that serves as the oxygen of making, as it allows for the beautiful to arise from the practical need for lucid exposition. For the collector passion is found in the allure of the hand made, the desire to engage with, share and enjoy the intimacy of the beautiful and unique. Conceived by the curators, the intention of The Threads That Bind vol. 1 exhibition is to showcase the diversity and creativity of artisans from around the world, allowing the visitor to explore works that would rarely be gathered in a single exhibition space. The result is an eclectic and visually stimulating collection of work, rich not only in colours, textures and materials, from the deceptively simple and sublime to the sophisticated and challenging, which each exhibitor articulates in their language of expression and making, manipulating concept and materials, either expanding on or embellishing the traditional along with more explorative works that challenge the dogma and assumptions of what is and what can be. The curators of The Threads That Bind vol. 1 invite you to engage with, share and enjoy the intimacy of the beautiful and unique.
