A great day for Saudi 🇸🇦 Art Scene!

Born in Mecca in 1954, Mounirah Mosly is considered a pioneer of Saudi Arabian modernism and is one of the Kingdom’s first established female artists. Mosly pursued her education internationally at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo, and later received a Master’s degree in Graphic Design in the United States. Upon her return, Mosly, alongside Safeya Binzagr, held an exhibition in 1968, a show significantly organised by two female artists. In 1973 she was the first woman to be granted a solo exhibition in the Municipality of Riyadh. Despite the parameters of her gender and her region’s artistic landscape Mosly remained, as artist Manal Al Dowayan describes, “a pioneer in all senses of the word” (Melissa Gronlund, ‘Mounirah Mosly, A Pioneer for women and art in Saudi Arabia’, The National News, 2019, online).

Mosly was equipped with an experimental disposition from early on, and this, paired with her enriching studies of and interest in the Arabian Peninsula’s historical culture, enabled a conscious and abundant artistic output. Mosly acquired inspiration multifariously, as she describes it, from “the whole universe, in addition to events in the Arab world, nature, human artifacts, poetry, music, and the depth of contemplation of man, existence, and readings” (ibid.). The artist’s fruitful oeuvre celebrates nature and colour through explorations with material and texture; she worked with natural dyes (which she made herself), copper, plant fibres, papyrus, and paper, often employing them in collage. In this way, Mosly was able to pay homage to her heritage and travels, as in the present work, in which she utilises the technique of handwoven carpet. Through what is regarded as a traditionally female craft, this work can be interpreted as a meditation upon the sensations, emotions and aspirations of the Arab woman in this particular time and space. A common, dextrous detail of Mosly’s work features here; the carpet hangs from a wooden window frame, which the artist would source from northern Saudi Arabia.

A great day for Saudi 🇸🇦 Art Scene!

Born in 1939, Mohammed Al Saleem is one of Saudi Arabia’s preeminent modern artists and one who has greatly contributed to the growth and evolution of Saudi art in the Kingdom. Al Saleem pursued formal art education abroad, studying at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Florence. A true pioneer, he held one of the first exhibitions in the municipality of Riyadh in 1967, and later in 1979 founded Dar Al-Funoon Al-Sa’udiyyah, which was inaugurated by HRH Prince Faisal bin Fahad Al-Saud. This multipurpose, nonprofit institute provided a creative space for artistic experimentation and exhibition, and was the first of its kind in the Kingdom.

The artistic and cultural influences that took place in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s saw the development of three key factions: the first was rooted in tradition and heritage; the second sought to move beyond the singularity of local customs in pursuit of artistic progress; and the third, to which Al Saleem belonged, sought a happy medium between the modernist and traditionalist. Untitled (1988) forms part of a group of paintings that feature this highly distinctive segmentation into organic block-like structures, which mark the cornerstone of Al Saleem’s mature artistic development. Coining his style ‘Horizonism’, or Al Afakia, this was inspired by the gradating skyline of Riyadh from the desert; the beauty of the landscape became central to his aesthetic vision, the purity of its experience fuelling a fascination with the ethereal and contemplative (Ayyam Gallery, The Beginnings of Art in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah, 2014, p. 23).
