‘Intersecting Eyes’ (تقاطع العيون) - 4 panels 56x56cm - 2019

The technical implementation is foundational to the strength of the concept. Each letter ‘ain’ module is digitally cut out of 3mm thick white cardboard, and manually coloured on the edges with permanent black ink, to further reinforce the notion of depth and perspective. And so, as the onlooker moves closer or further away from the piece, it either comes to the fore or disappears into the background in a mesmerising play on shallow spatial perspective, which is further reinforced with light and shadow.

With this, this artwork almost develops a life of its own, depending on the intersection of the gazer’s angle and the artist’s eye.

On exhibition until the 15th of January at gallery in

‘Intersecting Eyes’ (تقاطع العيون) at the Young Saoudi Artists which opened up to artists from the Arab world this year, hosted by Athr Gallery in Jeddah KSA until the 15th of January 2022.

This artwork consisting of 4 distinct mixed media relief panels represents the act of seeing as the invisible and hidden force behind any calligraphic work.

This is translated through the calligraphic interpretation of the middle form of the Arabic letter 'ain' (eye in Arabic) which, expresses the two distinct facets of the act of seeing.

And so, when we look at a piece of art, not only do we see it and interpret it from our perspective, but we also endeavour to capture the gaze of the artist him/herself. In so doing, and if only briefly, we borrow the artist calligrapher’s eyes in the hope of better understanding her/him message.

As such, the eye becomes, par excellence, the invisible insurmountable and conditional force with which all calligraphic artistic production begins and ends.

‘Meditations on the human essence’ (تأملات في جوهر الإنسان) at the Young Saoudi Artists which opened up to artists from the Arab world this year, hosted by Athr Gallery in Jeddah KSA.

In this work consisting of 4 mixed media pieces, the essence of ‘Insaan’ – the genderless Arabic word for ‘Human Being’, is embodied through a rather invisible and abstract layer represented by the dot perforations. They act as the eternal, incised core of a human being’s ‘essence’. However, it is not until the threads get sewn into these perforations in a careful and studied approach, that the essence of ‘Insaan’ gets exposed and articulated in an intelligible meaningful form.

As such, the threads symbolise on one hand the role played by external dynamics shaping every human being, and on the other hand, the constant endeavour required to bring the essence of human beings to the fore.

The incompleteness of the work implies the eternal onlooker’s part in completing the picture they hold about the ‘other’. The essence of ‘Insaan’ thus sometimes becomes a figment of our imagination and as such, at the mercy of the onlooker.

In this body of work for ‘Nomadic Traces’ curated by and organised by for ‘Scripts and Calligraphy: A Timeless Journey’ exhibition, I explore the magic and mysticism about the tension of leaving a trace behind for posterity, as a sign of life and being, no matter how fleeting, versus a transient journey, one defined by its ever evolving motion. The trace is the imprint, par excellence, of the narrative of motion, of freedom because it gets left behind. Where trace is palpable and inescapable, standing strong by defying time, journeys are defined and measured by time, they are in their very essence transient.

The exploration of this design concept on textile plays on the contrast between the fluidity of fabric representing the never ending motion of the desert’s nomadic journeys and the ever present imprint of calligraphy representing the notion of trace. In the same vain, the stitching motion represents the journey, leaving the stitch behind as its trace.

Ya Beirut... Now more than ever, you need to rise...

Sadly the poem written by Nizaar Kabbani during the civil war still stands true...

Happy Women’s Day to every woman out there, and to every man breaking the status quo to pave the way for a gender-equal society and culture. It all starts at a micro level, creating far reaching ripples.

On this day, a reminder to all of us... “Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.”
