Our Story

The Moscow Chamber Orchestra Musica Viva is a unique ensemble with a distinguished history stretching back 40 years. Musica Viva has gained particular renown for its historically authentic performances of musical works of different eras. It has undertaken a number of unique projects in this regard that have led to significant events in the musical life of Russia. Musica Viva regularly plays scores by Western European composers of the Baroque and Classical eras previously unknown to Russian audiences. It has given special attention to operas and oratorios performed with the participation of highly regarded and experienced foreign singers and conductors. In recent years, under Maestro Rudin’s direction, Musica Viva has performed Joseph Haydn’s oratorios «The Creation» and «The Seasons», both of which are works very rarely heard in Moscow. In collaboration with English conductor Christopher Moulds, it presented the Russian premiere of «Orlando», one of the most celebrated of George Frideric Handel’s many operas. Since 1988, Musica Viva has a Moscow Philharmonia subscription series, «Masterpieces and Premieres», which has offered listeners outstandingly original programs of classical music. The orchestra’s concerts in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall have also acquainted the public with world-famous musicians who have never before performed in Russia. Among them have been English conductors Christopher Hogwood and Sir Roger Norrington, the latter an acknowledged master of authentic performance style who has conducted the orchestra with great success on three occasions. In 2000, Musica Viva initiated an international annual chamber music festival called «Dedication», to which it invites well-known performers from throughout the world. The festival has traditionally taken place in the Tretyakov Gallery. In 2008, Musica Viva was designated a State Cultural Organization of Moscow. In 2009, the orchestra received one of the special grants bestowed by the Government of the Russian Federation on leading musical ensembles. Musica Viva has made an extensive series of recordings, including not only famous classical music pieces, but also unknown remarkable works, which have never been recorded before. Московский камерный оркестр Musica Viva – коллектив с особой историей, насчитывающей 40 лет творческой деятельности. Одной из отличительных стилевых особенностей оркестра Musica Viva является стремление к исторически достоверному исполнению музыкальных произведений разных эпох. Оркестр провел ряд уникальных проектов в этой области, ставших знаковыми событиями для музыкальной жизни России. Musica Viva регулярно исполняет партитуры западноевропейских композиторов эпохи барокко и классицизма, никогда ранее не исполнявшихся в России. Особое внимание заслуживают оперные и ораториальные проекты оркестра с участием зарубежных певцов и дирижеров – крупнейших мастеров этого жанра. С 1998 года именной абонемент оркестра Musica Viva в Московской филармонии «Шедевры и Премьеры» представляет слушателям оригинальные программы классической музыки. Концерты, проходящие в Большой зале Консерватории и Концертном зале им. П. И. Чайковского, знакомят публику с мировыми знаменитостями, никогда ранее не выступавшими в России. Среди них — выступление с оркестром английского дирижера Кристофера Хогвуда, а также признанного мастера исторического исполнения сэра Роджера Норрингтона, трижды с большим успехом выступившего с оркестром Musica Viva. С 2000 года оркестр Musica Viva организует в Третьяковской галерее ежегодный международный музыкальный фестиваль камерной музыки «Посвящение» с участием известных исполнителей со всего мира. В 2008 году оркестр Musica Viva получил статус Государственного бюджетного учреждения культуры г. Москвы, а с 2009 году оркестр получает специальный грант Президента Российской Федерации, предоставляемый ведущим музыкальным коллективам. Оркестром Musica Viva записана обширная коллекция дисков, включающих как известные произведения мировой классики, так и редкие, впервые записанные произведения.
