Șona AIR

Șona AIR Long-term artistic residency program taking place twice a year in the Blue House from Șona (Brașov County), Romania.

The Șona AIR (Artists in Residence) program is intended for artists whose working process involves long-term projects and research. Based on the model of individual residencies, the program aims to support artists in researching and completing their own projects. Residencies take place twice a year, hosting two artists or duos for 8 to 12 weeks at the Blue House in Șona, Brașov County. The residen

cy house was built in 1880 and renovated in 2011 to preserve local heritage. The Ștefan Câlția Foundation became culturally involved in the village of Șona through the creation of a village association and the annual local newspaper Șona Noastră. It supported renovation processes of key buildings in the village, such as Lazăr’s Forge, as a partner in the architectural restoration and conservation projects initiated by the Monumentum association. The foundation was established in 2016 with the aim of promoting projects from the field of visual culture, offering support for organisational development and sustainability. Since 2024, the Foundation has organized Șona AIR residencies, co-funded by AFCN, welcoming Romanian and international artists from diverse cultural fields to collaborate and work on interdisciplinary projects.

This autumn, we welcome Raluca Popa and Seda Mimaroğlu to the Blue House.

Their shared project, here we have it / here we have not, is an act of translation: a poem by Seda finds shape as a drawing by Raluca, and the drawing takes form again as text.

Seda Mimaroğlu is a Turkish poet and researcher who works at the intersection of text, sound, and silence. Raluca Popa, a Romanian visual artist, traces the passage of ideas across drawing, video, and object.

At Șona, the two continue their dialogue, exploring the air between text and image in the form of books, videos, and audio works. Their days side by side become part of the artwork itself.

It’s an experiment with closeness, play, and the choreography of a shared space 🍂🍁

Katharina Ludwig is an interdisciplinary researcher and artist who finds power in what’s missing. In their work, gaps, wounds, and holes in text make space for a (potentially hopeful) form of sabotage and resistance.

They call this practice “un-healing,” which values vulnerability as a form of revolt and directly contests expectations of trauma recovery that pressure individuals to achieve closure.

During their residency at Şona, they will be preparing two books that put this theory into practice: their doctoral thesis, “The Hole: An Insurrectionary Poetics,” and a poetry collection, “The Girl Without.”

There is a poetics in absence, and Katharina is its cartographer. We are excited to welcome them and their work ☁️☁️

Here’s how things turned out during the residency:

Maria Oblicka and Alex Cabeza Trigg edited UTKANE, a film about a 99-year-old textile artist Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet, a key figure of the Polish School of Textile Art.

🧶In the interview, they describe their process as weaving: slow, layered, intuitive. Sometimes they wondered if it was even finished, until they realised that’s not the point 🌥️

We’re curious where life carries you next, and 🎥🗺️We’ll be here.

Is writing work? Can a poem pay rent?

Poet and activist Nóra Ugron reflects on writing without urgency, and how the residency offered the kind of time and space needed to shape their new book, Uimirea-frică a pământului.

Nóra’s practice asks us to care more deeply about the spaces we inhabit, the bodies we hold, and the futures we imagine. We’re grateful you were here, 🍄

Pour yourself a drink and press play on the Șona AIR Youtube page for the full interview☕️👀

Maria, Nóra and Alex have left Șona 🗺️🚙

Over the past few months, Maria Oblicka and Alexander Cabeza Trigg have been editing UTKANE, their documentary about textile artist Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet. Nóra Ugron put together thier poetry book “Uimirea-frică a pământului”, and kept Tomiță 🐈‍⬛ (formerly Moldoveanu) well fed.

Now, the Blue house feels a bit empty. It’s not completely silent, as you can hear the birds choir and the storks tap their beaks on the rooftop.

Thank you for this season 🫂

This spring, multidisciplinary duo Maria Oblicka & Alexander Cabeza Trigg bring their cinematic perspectives to Șona AIR.

Filmmakers and researchers, Maria & Alex work at the intersection of documentary, anthropology, and installation work.

Maria comes from a background in sculpture and site-specific installation, while Alex, with a foundation in anthropology, incorporates participatory methods into his film practice.

At Șona AIR they’ll focus on editing their current documentary, UTKANE, an intimate portrait of Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet, a key figure of the Polish School of Textile Arts. Through archival materials and recent footage, the film traces her creative process and the overlooked legacy of textile art.

Between moments of pause and precision, their film takes shape at the Blue House.
This program is made possible by the Stefan Câlția Foundation. Cultural project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.

Welcoming the creative explorations of Nóra Ugron.

Poet, researcher, and activist, Nóra navigates literature, politics, and languages, tying together queerness, ecology, and social justice in their writing.

They are part of the queer-feminist literary circle Cenaclul X, coordinates ELMO - Eastern European Left Media Outlet, and they also advocated for housing justice in Cluj-Napoca.

During the Șona AIR residency, they are shaping Uimirea-frică a pământului, a hybrid poetry volume with lyrical essays, and theoretical ruminations, exploring wonder and fear as intertwined forces.

Their words softly, yet firmly create a space of resistance and tenderness, where identity expands to hold the complexities of care, grief, and transformation.

Consider yourself invited to follow their journey at the Blue House and wherever thought and footsteps lead.
