✝️ THE SAINTS ARE ALIVE IN CHRIST: WHAT THE BIBLE ACTUALLY TEACHES

“The dead are unconscious and cannot hear us.”

Is that actually what the Bible teaches?

No.

Scripture does not portray those who have died as simply unconscious or nonexistent until the resurrection.

Jesus said:

“He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

— Mark 12:27

Luke’s parallel makes the point even clearer:

“For to him all are alive.”

— Luke 20:38

At the Transfiguration, Moses—who had died—and Elijah appear in glory, fully conscious and speaking with Jesus about what He was going to accomplish in Jerusalem (Luke 9:30–31).

St. Paul likewise speaks of death as being with Christ:

“My desire is to depart and be with Christ.”

— Philippians 1:23

And:

“We would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:8

Revelation gives us an unmistakable picture of conscious souls in heaven. The souls of the martyrs cry out to God:

“How long, Sovereign Lord… before you judge…?”

— Revelation 6:9–10

They are not unconscious. They are alive, aware, and praying.

✝️ WHAT ABOUT THE INTERCESSION OF THE SAINTS?

Revelation shows the twenty-four elders before the Lamb holding:

“Golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.”

— Revelation 5:8

Likewise, an angel at the heavenly altar offers incense together with “the prayers of all the saints” before God (Revelation 8:3–4).

For Catholics, Scripture is even more explicit in 2 Maccabees 15:12–16, where the departed high priest Onias and the prophet Jeremiah are depicted praying for God’s people.

Hebrews 12:1 describes Christians as “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” By itself, this verse does not mean that every saint is watching every event on earth, but it beautifully expresses the continuity between the faithful who have gone before us and those still running the race.

Catholics do NOT believe that saints are omniscient or possess supernatural power independently of God.

The saints are creatures.

Whatever they know, they know through God. Whatever help they give comes through God. Whatever prayers they offer are offered to God.

When Catholics ask a saint to “pray for us,” we are not replacing Jesus Christ or worshipping the saint. We are asking a living member of the Body of Christ to intercede for us—just as we ask Christians on earth to pray for us.

What, then, about verses such as Ecclesiastes 9:5: “the dead know nothing”?

Read the context.

Ecclesiastes is describing what the dead can no longer do “under the sun”—that is, participate in this earthly life (Ecclesiastes 9:5–6). It should not be isolated from the fuller revelation concerning life after death given through Christ and the New Testament.

For the Christian, bodily death is not annihilation.

Those who die in Christ remain alive in Christ as they await the resurrection of the body.

The Communion of Saints is a communion of the living.

“For to him all are alive.”

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a profound disruption of the excitatory–inhibitory balance through excessive glutamate release (excitotoxicity) and impaired GABAergic inhibition. Preclinical evidence, supported by multiple peer-reviewed studies, demonstrates that cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids can attenuate cortical glutamate surge, preserve or enhance GABAergic signaling, reduce neuroinflammation, and limit secondary neuronal damage. This review synthesizes current scientific literature (primarily 2018–2025) and validates the most consistent findings regarding the neuroprotective role of cannabinoids in TBI.

Introduction
Traumatic brain injury remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Secondary injury cascades—excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction—amplify the initial mechanical damage (Xiong et al., 2013; Simon et al., 2017). A central pathophysiological feature is the acute dysregulation of glutamate and GABA homeostasis, which drives neuronal hyperexcitability, cell death, and long-term neurological deficits (Guerriero et al., 2015; Dorsett et al., 2017).

Glutamatergic–GABAergic Imbalance in TBI (Validated Mechanisms)
1 Excitotoxicity: Within minutes to hours after TBI, extracellular glutamate rises dramatically in cortex and hippocampus (measured by microdialysis in rodent and pig models), reaching neurotoxic levels (≥10–100-fold baseline) and overactivating NMDA/AMPA receptors, leading to Ca²⁺ overload (Faden et al., 1989; Folkersma et al., 2011; Chamard et al., 2022).

2 GABAergic impairment: Loss of GABAergic interneurons, reduced GAD67 expression, and downregulation of GABA-A receptor subunits contribute to disinhibition and increased seizure susceptibility (Hunt et al., 2010; Gibson et al., 2021).

3 Clinical correlates: Persistent glutamate elevation and reduced GABA correlate with post-traumatic epilepsy, cognitive decline, and chronic pain in human studies using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) (Harris et al., 2012; Kang et al., 2022).

Cannabinoid Mechanisms Supported by Peer-Reviewed Evidence

CBD (3–10 mg/kg i.p. or i.v.) administered before or within 1–6 h after controlled cortical impact (CCI) or fluid percussion injury significantly attenuates the acute cortical glutamate surge (30–70 % reduction vs vehicle). Effect is sustained for at least 30 days with repeated dosing.

Preservation/enhancement of GABAergic transmission
CBD increases GABA release in hippocampus and cortex; upregulates GABA-A α1/α2 subunits; potentiates GABA currents via positive allosteric modulation (indirect). 2-AG and CB1 agonists also enhance GABAergic tone via presynaptic inhibition of glutamate onto inhibitory interneurons.

Anti-inflammatory effects
CBD and CB2-selective agonists reduce microglial activation, IL-1β, TNF-α, and COX-2 expression; decrease neutrophil infiltration.

Antioxidant & mitochondrial protection
CBD restores glutathione levels, reduces lipid peroxidation, and preserves mitochondrial membrane potential.
Campos et al., 2016; Sun et al., 2022

Anti-seizure effects
CBD (Epidiolex®️) is FDA-approved for epilepsy; reduces post-traumatic seizures in multiple rodent TBI models.
Jones et al., 2020; Mayo et al., 2023

Landmark Study Highlight (Pazos et al., Neurotherapeutics, 2022)
• Model: Weight-drop TBI in rats
• Intervention: CBD 10 mg/kg i.v. 15 min pre-injury, then daily i.p. for 30 days
• Primary outcome: Real-time cortical microdialysis showed complete prevention of the glutamate spike at 2 h and sustained normalization at 7 and 30 days (p < 0.001 vs vehicle).
• Secondary outcomes: Reduced neuronal loss in CA3 hippocampus, improved novel object recognition, and decreased seizure susceptibility.

Similar results have since been independently replicated in mice (Magid et al., 2022) and juvenile pigs (Ardianto et al., 2023).
Current Clinical Evidence (as of November 2025)
• Phase I/II trials (NCT05066321, NCT05638841) confirm excellent safety and blood–brain barrier pe*******on of CBD in moderate–severe TBI patients.
• Observational data from medical cannabis registries show reduced opioid use and improved sleep/cognition in veterans with TBI using CBD-dominant formulations (Gruber et al., 2024).
• Large randomized controlled trials (e.g., Australian/New Zealand Phase III, expected readout 2026) are ongoing.
Limitations & Future Directions
• Most mechanistic data remain preclinical; human glutamate/GABA dynamics are inferred from MRS rather than direct sampling.
• Optimal dosing windows (pre-injury vs. post-injury), formulations (pure CBD vs. CBD+minor cannabinoids), and combination with hypothermia or other therapies are still under investigation.
• THC-containing preparations show promise but carry risk of psychotomimetic effects in acute brain injury.

Conclusion
Strong preclinical evidence—now spanning more than a decade and multiple species—demonstrates that cannabidiol and other cannabinoids can effectively attenuate the glutamate surge, restore GABAergic inhibition, and mitigate secondary injury after TBI. Emerging clinical safety data and early efficacy signals support translation to human patients. Cannabinoid-based therapies represent one of the most promising neuroprotective strategies currently under active investigation for traumatic brain injury.

A study published in 2024 investigated how cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant, affects physical endurance in mice. Researchers observed that CBD administration made skeletal muscles more resistant to fatigue and improved mitochondrial function, the primary energy-producing structures within cells. These beneficial effects were found to depend heavily on CBD-induced changes in the gut microbiome, with one specific bacterial strain, Bifidobacterium animalis KBP-1, playing a central mediating role.

Background on CBD and Muscle Physiology
CBD, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), does not produce psychoactive effects. It has been extensively researched for anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticonvulsant properties. Following its removal from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, interest has grown in its potential as a legal performance-enhancing aid. Skeletal muscle contains slow-twitch fibers (optimized for sustained, endurance-type activity) and fast-twitch fibers (suited for explosive power). Endurance training typically shifts fiber composition toward the more fatigue-resistant slow-twitch type. The study examined whether CBD could induce similar adaptations and whether the gut microbiota contributes to this process.

Study Design
Researchers divided laboratory mice into multiple groups. Some received daily oral CBD (30 mg/kg) for four weeks, others received CBD plus the broad-spectrum antibiotic doxycycline to deplete gut bacteria, and additional groups were supplemented with specific bacterial strains. Endurance capacity was assessed via treadmill running to exhaustion, measuring both time and distance covered.

Additional analyses included:
• Muscle fiber typing in the gastrocnemius muscle
• Mitochondrial density and respiratory function
• Gut microbiome composition via 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomics
• Blood metabolites (glucose, lactate, ketones)

Key Findings
1 CBD significantly improved exercise endurance: CBD-treated mice ran substantially longer and farther before exhaustion than controls. Their muscles appeared redder (indicative of higher myoglobin and mitochondrial content), showed an increase in slow-twitch (type I and IIa) fibers, and a corresponding decrease in fast-twitch (type IIb) fibers. Muscles also displayed greater fatigue resistance and stronger force generation.

2 CBD enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and function: Treated muscles exhibited higher mitochondrial density, improved oxidative capacity, and activation of key regulatory pathways (AMPK, PKA, and PGC-1α), all of which support greater energy efficiency during prolonged exercise.

3 Gut microbiota was essential for CBD’s effects: When gut bacteria were depleted using doxycycline, all endurance, fiber-type, and mitochondrial benefits of CBD were completely abolished, proving that an intact microbiome is required.

4 CBD remodeled the gut microbiome: CBD increased the abundance of bacteria from the families Erysipelotrichaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae, particularly the genera Faecalibaculum and Bifidobacterium.

5 Bifidobacterium animalis KBP-1 alone recapitulated CBD’s benefits: Oral administration of the single strain KBP-1 (isolated from CBD-treated mice) produced endurance improvements comparable to CBD itself, including enhanced running performance, reduced blood lactate accumulation, elevated circulating ketones, and promotion of fatigue-resistant muscle fibers. In contrast, supplementation with Faecalibaculum rodentium had no significant effect.

6 Mechanistic insight into KBP-1: Genomic analysis revealed that KBP-1 possesses genes enabling lactic acid metabolism and synthesis of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), compounds known to delay fatigue and support muscle endurance during prolonged exercise.

7 Short-chain fatty acids were not the primary mediators: Although a modest rise in circulating propionic acid was noted, its magnitude was insufficient to account for the observed performance gains.

Interpretation
The study demonstrated in mice that CBD enhances exercise endurance primarily through gut-microbiome-dependent mechanisms. It promotes a shift toward fatigue-resistant muscle fibers, increases mitochondrial efficiency, and enriches the gut with beneficial bacteria—most notably Bifidobacterium animalis KBP-1—which appears to mediate many of these adaptations via lactate metabolism and BCAA production. While direct effects of CBD on muscle cannabinoid receptors cannot be excluded, the microbiota emerged as the dominant pathway in this experimental model.

Limitations and Future Directions
The researchers acknowledged limitations, including the relatively small sample size and the lack of direct measurement of tissue BCAA levels. Future work will involve larger cohorts, additional bacterial strains, and eventual translation to human studies to determine whether CBD and/or probiotic supplementation with strains such as KBP-1 can safely and effectively improve endurance performance in people.

Conclusion
This research provides experimental evidence that CBD improves exercise endurance in mice largely by reshaping the gut microbiome and enriching it with Bifidobacterium animalis KBP-1. These findings open new avenues for microbiome-targeted interventions and CBD-based strategies to enhance physical stamina, particularly in endurance sports.
