ENVIRONMENTAL UTOPIAS is a bioacoustics and biosignaling pilot research project created in partnership with Galeria Electroputere and the “Dimitrie Brindza” Botanical Garden in Bucharest. Its polyphonic sonification method is based on a complex chain of software and hardware elements meant to extract, process and interpret the data gathered in the form of electric signals produced by macroflora. We have created the largest resource for biodata after recording more than 120 species of plants, moss, lichens, mushrooms and trees over a period of 6 months in the Danube Delta, the seaside, the Latorita mountains and in Bucharest. The impulses are collected over variable periods of time in and processed in Kyma, then sent to Python and Pure Data for manipulation. The result of our research is a contrasting audio/visual essay, objectively ironic in its artistic demeanor and yet subjectively informative as an empiric study.
ENVIRONMENTAL UTOPIAS will be premiered on the 27th October in Iasi, at ICMA Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in Art, Casa Muzeelor, from 16.30.
