REF MEMORY ARCHIVED PROJECTS | 2023 | Here They Lived | Apollonia Culture Bank | Hermanstadt + Carol 53 Bucharest
The work is four boxes. Three are here, and the fourth isn't, which is usually how it goes with the people too.
Each roll is a life wound small enough to store. Cloth, tightly rolled, shelved in a little black box like a book whose spine you can no longer read.
Blue and gold: the colors we use to dignify what we can't bring back. Iconography for ordinary people (and I love to do it).

Lucrarea e din patru casete. Trei sunt aici. A patra, nu — cam așa se intampla de obicei și cu oamenii.
Fiecare rulou e o viață înfășurată destul de strâns cât să încapă aici la păstrare. Pânză rulată, așezată într-o caseta neagră, o carte al cărei cotor nu se mai poate citi.
Albastru și aur: culorile cu care înnobilăm ce nu mai putem aduce înapoi. Iconografie pentru oameni obișnuiți.
Un raft, sau un șir de sicrie, în funcție de cât privești.

An address is a small machine for remembering. People lived here. Then they didn't.

What stays: nine linden fragments on a golden ground — reliquaries for lives too small to fit into history.The wall keeps its own record: water, stain, the shape of something that was here. The work doesn't decorate the wall. It reads it.

O adresă e o mică mașinărie de ținut minte. Aici au locuit oameni. Apoi nu.

Ce rămâne: fragmente încasetate pe fond de aur si praf — relicvarii pentru vieți prea mici ca să încapă în istorie.

Peretele își ține propriul registru: apă, pată, forma a ceva ce a fost aici. Lucrarea nu decorează peretele. Îl citește.

REF LAB WORK 2025 - Threads + signs
It is the map of one person: my grandmother Maria, who disappeared in the 1977 earthquake. What stays with you is the trace.
Memory doesn't keep much, just a vague knot, the point where the thread won't pull straight anymore.
So I built a grid and I threaded it. Over it, private notations, signs only I can read. Beneath it, archival boxes of eroded wood, where the traces are filed and left to decay.
It's the same operation as everything else I make: take the chaos, lay a structure over it, map what can be mapped, archive the rest. Memory is a chaotic beast. The grid is the cage.
The squares, the spheres, the threads, the boxes — one system. Memory, mapping, archive.

REF LAB WORK 2025 - Noduri + Semne | Pătratele, sferele, firele, cutiile — un singur sistem. Memorie, mapare, arhivă.
Este harta unei singure persoane: bunica mea Maria, dispărută la cutremurul din 1977. Ce rămâne e urma.
Memoria nu păstrează imaginea. Păstrează nodul, punctul în care firul se prinde și nu se mai întinde drept.
Așa că am construit o grilă și am țesut-o. Peste ea, o notație privată: semne pe care doar eu le citesc. Sub ea, cutii de arhivă din lemn erodat, unde urmele sunt depuse și lăsate să se degradeze.
E aceeași operație ca tot restul: iei haosul, așezi o structură peste el, mapezi ce se poate mapa, arhivezi restul. Memoria e o fiară haotică. Grila ei este cușca.

This is the logic under everything I make: identify the structure, test it, watch it fail. Map, archive, repeat.
The squares, the spheres, the books, the threads, one system."Structure identified" — a mini-series inside theSafety First. It begins where Malevich stopped. His black square was an end: painting reduced to zero, the void as absolute.
I treat the black square as a beginning,field to be mapped.
Over the black I draw structure — square, diagonal, circle, spiral. I identify it. Then I reject it. Circle preferred to Malevich's square.
Because no structure holds for long. We lay geometry over the void to make it legible, the same way memory lays order over chaos. The cage never fits the beast.

===========Asta e logica din spatele a tot ce fac: identifici structura, o testezi, o privești cedând. Mapezi, arhivezi, reiei.
Pătratele, sferele, cărțile, firele — un singur sistem.„Structure identified" esteo mini-serie din Safety First.
Pornește de unde s-a oprit Malevich. Pătratul lui negru era un capăt: pictura redusă la zero, golul ca absolut.
Eu tratez aici pătratul negru ca pe un început, e un câmp de mapat.
Peste negru desenez structuri. Un pătrat, o diagonală, apoi un cerc, o spirală.Preferrcul, preferat pătratului lui Malevich.
Pentru că nicio structură nu ține mult. Așezăm geometrie peste gol ca să-l facem lizibil, exact cm memoria așază ordine peste haos. Cușca nu se potrivește niciodată fiarei.

Pages that look like they survived a fire.
But they didn't burn, they were covered, layer over layer, black over black. Bak to black.
A grammar book underneath. Rules of correct speech, silenced by hand.
What remains is the weight, the deformation, and the silence.

Pagini ce par să fi supraviețuit focului.
N-au ars, au fost acoperite, strat peste strat, negru peste negru. Inapoi la negru....
Dedesubt, o carte de gramatică. Regulile vorbirii corecte, reduse la tăcere de o mâna umana.
Ce rămâne e greutate, deformare, tăcere.

Structure built as restraint, where the book is held together by the same pressure that deforms it.
Persistence comes at a price.
Sometimes what survives can't be touched.

Detaliu.
Cupru, sârmă, fir înnodat. Fiecare celulă oxidată a fost fixată la locul ei.
Structura este aici tensiune, iar cartea e ținută laolaltă chiar de presiunea care o deformează.
Pentru că persistența vine cu un preț, acela că, uneori, ceea ce supraviețuiește nu mai poate fi atins de o mână umană

Binary promised what fire couldn't: perfect storage, forever.
This is exactly the failure I have documented. Cell by cell, written by hand. Oxidation, pigment, erosion. ERROR surfaces, then dissolves.
The most precise language ever invented, applied by the slowest method, onto matter that degrades it.
Analog wins.

Binarul analog ne-a promis stocarea perfectă, o tinerețe eternă.
Și acesta eșecul documentat de lucrare, celulă după celulă. Oxid, pigment, eroziune. ERROR apare, apoi se dizolvă.
Cel mai precis limbaj inventat vreodată, aplicat prin cea mai lentă metodă, pe o materie care îl degradează continuu.
Analogul învinge mereu.

Again and again and again.
Binary code that isn't made for paper. It lives in systems built to outlast decay.
Here it is, transcribed by the slowest method, onto the most fragile surface there is.
A language no machine can read and no human can execute.

Codul binar nu e făcut pentru hârtie, trăiește în sisteme construite să învingă degradarea.
L-am transcris aici prin cea mai lentă metodă, pe cea mai fragilă suprafață care există, hârtia.
Un limbaj pe care nicio mașină nu-l poate citi și niciun om nu-l poate executa sau pune în practică.
