Today in history, part 2
The second event we commemorate today is the death, on April 6, 1490, of king Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary, the historical patron of our group.
King Matthias is considered to be the greatest king of Hungary, who managed to bring his kingdom among the great European powers of the 15th century. Boosting the greatest mercenary army ever seen in medieval Europe, the 10,000 strong Black Army, he conquered Vienna in 1485, and by 1487 annexed the entire duchy of Austria. His official titles in the year of his death looked like this:
"Mathias dei gracia Hungarie, Bohemie, Dalmacie, Croacie, Rame, Seruie, Gallicie, Lodomerie, Comanie, Bulgarieque Rex, necnon Austrie, Slesie et Lucemburgensis Dux, Marchioque Morauie et Lusacie."
(Matthias, by the grace of God king of Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Rama, Serbia, Gallitia, Lodomeria, Cumania, and Bulgaria, as well as Duke of Austria, Silesia and Luxembourg, and Margrave of Moravia and Lusatia).
