OPENING THIS FRIDAY

⚈ The Promise by Christian Jankowski ⚈

Christian Jankowski is a well-renowned conceptual artist whose collaborative practice creates exchanges between the art world and other fields. Drawing on mass media formats and popular culture, his work explores the ways in which experience is mediated and translated, primarily through performance, video and photography, alongside installation, sculpture and painting. His projects often place people in unpredictable situations, revealing the relationships and beliefs that shape society, with an emphasis on process and its potential for transformation.

Born in 1968 in Göttingen, Germany, Jankowski lives in Berlin and works internationally. He studied at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg, and has been Professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart since 2005.
Recent solo exhibitions and presentations include Telenovela, Americas Society, New York (2026–27); Christian Jankowski and Nidhal Chamekh, Galleria Enrico Astuni, Bologna (2026); Pension ABC, Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin (2026); High as a Kite – Luftschlösser in Kunst und Gegenwart, Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven (2026); Crone Gallery, Vienna (2025); Overbeck-Gesellschaft, Lübeck (2023); Kunsthalle Tübingen (2022); Fluentum, Berlin (2020); and Suprainfinit Gallery, Bucharest (2020).
His work has been presented in major international institutions including MAXXI, Rome; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Bozar, Brussels; MUDAM, Luxembourg; Kunstmuseum Bonn; ARoS Aarhus; Deichtorhallen, Hamburg; the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; and MARe Museum of Recent Art, Bucharest. He has participated in international biennials including Venice, Whitney, Berlin, Sydney, Taipei, Yokohama, Bangkok and Cuenca. In 2016, he curated the 11th edition of Manifesta, becoming the first artist to assume this role.

How can a group of witches influence the power of art?

In the monumental hall of Casa Scânteii, the former printing house of the Romanian communist press, internationally acclaimed artist Christian Jankowski challenges conventional curatorial practices. The selection of works is guided not by theoretical or market considerations, but by a Romanian-Roma witch supported by her team. By consciously giving up artistic control, Jankowski transforms the selection process itself into a performance, bringing together the rational legacy of Scânteia+ with mystical and cultural traditions.

The exhibition will present a new work alongside other artworks by the artist, spanning the last 25 years of his career. The new artwork includes a video and a series of photographs presenting rituals performed in Casa Scânteii that are trying to influence the reception of the work itself. The spells reflect love, visibility, and success.
