🗓️ Last week to visit A world in a Negative exhibition curated by Corina Oprea with research by Ana-Maria Stefan

From Nicolae Ceaușescu’s visit to Khartoum in 1972 and President Jaafar Nimeiri’s visit to Bucharest in 1973, to Yasser Arafat’s meeting with Palestinian students in Bucharest in 1981 and the publication of the first Romanian anthology of African poetry in 1977, A World in a Negative traces overlooked histories of solidarity, cultural exchange, and political imaginaries between Romania, Sudan, and Palestine.

Ovidiu Țichindeleanu’s archival research enters into dialogue with Space Black’s installation, which reconnects Bucharest and Khartoum through architecture, archival fragments, maps, and collective memory, centering the National Assembly building in Khartoum designed by Romanian architect Cezar Lăzărescu.

Listening across geographies 🎧

The sonic layer of A World in a Negative brings together field recordings, poetry, family archives, interviews, revolutionary slogans, and music from Sudan and Romania, tracing connections between architecture, memory, migration, and political imaginaries. Alongside the sound installation, (Mihaela Vasiliu) has curated a selection of vinyl records from Romania and across Africa, extending the exhibition through the histories, circulations, and resonances of sound.

O selecție de șase broderii palestiniene din colecția Muzeului Național de Istorie a României indică broderia ca depozitar viu al memoriei, cunoașterii și apartenenței. Asemenea arhitecturii, tatreez-ul codifică istorii locale, geografii și forme comunitare de transmitere. Motivele cusute în țesătură funcționează ca hărți culturale care continuă să susțină identitatea și reziliența palestiniană în contexte de strămutare, ocupație și diaspora.

A selection of six Palestinian embroideries from the collection of the The National History Museum of Romania points to embroidery as a living repository of memory, knowledge, and belonging. Much like architecture, Tatreez encodes local histories, geographies, and communal forms of transmission. The motifs stitched into fabric function as cultural maps that continue to sustain Palestinian identity and resilience across displacement, occupation, and diaspora.

The exhibition A World in a Negative curated by Corina Oprea brings together artistic commissions, architectural histories, sonic works, and archival materials to explore the material afterlives of Romania, Sudan, and Palestine.

For the first time in an exhibition context, RIWAQ – Centre for Architectural Conservation presents selections from its architectural archive, developed over more than three decades of documenting, restoring, and reactivating Palestinian architectural heritage. Through photographs, maps, surveys, and research materials, the archive unfolds across geographical, chronological, and material constellations, tracing changing understandings of heritage in Palestine from the 1980s to the present.

RIWAQ – Centre for Architectural Conservation is a Palestinian non-profit organization founded in 1991 to preserve and reactivate architectural heritage across Palestine. Through documentation, restoration, research, and community-based initiatives, RIWAQ connects cultural heritage with social life, safeguarding historic buildings and fostering collective memory and public engagement.

📍The exhibition remains open until 16 August.
Visiting hours: Thursday–Sunday, 15:00–19:00.

We’re excited to announce the next edition of the NAZRA Book Club, where we’ll be discussing „Season of Migration to the North” by Tayeb Salih. 📚

A landmark of modern Arabic literature, the novel opens conversations around colonialism, identity, exile, and encounters between North and South. The gathering will also include a 🍉Palestinian tasting and a 🎧 Sonic Archive by Chlorys (Mihaela Vasiliu) and Heba Tabidi (Space Black), inviting participants to continue reflecting on migration, memory, and shared histories beyond the page.

Într-o serie nou comisionată de douăsprezece fotografii, Mona Vătămanu și Florin Tudor reflectează asupra operei de artă ca act de rezistență prin imagini ale unor picturi din colecția Muzeului Național de Artă al României care au fost lovite de gloanțe în timpul Revoluției Române din decembrie 1989. Ecou al ideii formulate de Gilles Deleuze despre o „afinitate fundamentală” între artă și rezistență, seria urmărește atât urmele violenței, cât și procesele de conservare și restaurare care au făcut posibilă supraviețuirea acestor lucrări.

La mai bine de trei decenii de la evenimente, aproximativ 85 la sută dintre picturile afectate au fost restaurate, în timp ce altele continuă să poarte cicatrici vizibile. Situate între traumă și reparare, fotografiile dezvăluie patrimoniul cultural ca spațiu în care violența și restaurarea rămân înscrise material.
