Laub’s lens reveals only scintillating foam patches on a dirty sidewalk, the twisted bars of a window, a terrifying clowder of pigeons, or ambiguous fragments of words on walls. It is on this absence of traces that the silence of Romania has been constructed, despite the exhortations of the European courts. Laub goes in search of images, following by default a logic of evocations, of flashes without thunder, of sensations – in hopes of touching, in the obscurity of night, some truth that he can draw into the light. To one who ventures to decipher them, his images – deep, full of contrasts, sooty, empty of any human presence – evoke rage and helplessness.

As in the first two series, we see in Mineriada an approach wedded to a sense of the ludicrous: ostensibly featureless views alternate with startling details, the discomfiting nature of which is accentuated by jarring violations of the frame, oblique camera angles, violent lighting. A cruel confrontation of aesthetics – swinging from anger to disenchantment and back again – is at work. Starting with a rearview mirror on a street in Strasbourg that invites us to join the photographer’s journey into the past, we increasingly find, as we delve deeper, high-angled, intrusive snapshots, recalling the images Weegee took of crime scenes in New York.

Anton Roland Laub is a Bucharest-born visual artist who lives and works in Berlin. He holds an MA from the Weissensee Academy of Art, Berlin, having previously completed his studies at the New School for Photography, Berlin, and graduated from the University of Bucharest. Laub has been exhibited internationally, notably in the Wende Museum, Los Angeles; at the Triennial of Photography and Architecture, Brussels; Les Rencontres d’Arles; FORMAT International Photography Festival, Derby; European Month of Photography, Athens and Berlin; PhotoSaintGermain, Paris; Helsinki Photo Festival, Helsinki. His works have been reviewed and featured in the international press and are held in public and private collections.

We are grateful to everyone who came to experience the exhibition despite the weather and to share the evening with us. It was a pleasure to welcome you all.

Through photography, MINERIADA revisits one of the most complex and unresolved chapters of Romania’s recent history, inviting us to reflect on memory, trauma, and the ways the past continues to shape the present.

On Saturday, 13 June, we hosted a talk as part of the exhibition programme — marking exactly 26 years since the event that took place in Bucharest in 1990.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us that morning for listening and taking part in a discussion with , .voss, and , reflecting on photography, the artist’s practice and previous projects, and the ways in which such histories are read and interpreted from perspectives less directly embedded in Romania’s social and political context.

Artist Talk | In Conversation with Anton Roland Laub

On Saturday, June 13’th, at 12:00 PM, we invite you to Galeria 2/3 for an open conversation with our exhibiting artist Anton Roland Laub, held in extension of the exhibition Mineriada.

The discussion will bring together Anton Roland Laub, Sonia Voss, curator of the exhibition, and Horațiu Lipot, who will moderate the conversation. Starting from the themes explored in the exhibition, the discussion will address the intersections of art, history, memory, and photography, as well as the ways in which images can contribute to understanding and reinterpreting the recent past.

The event is open to the public and free of charge. The conversation will be held in English.

2/3 Galeria are plăcerea de a vă invita la vernisajul expoziției „Mineriada” de Anton Roland Laub, vineri, 12 iunie 2026, de la ora 18:00, în prezența artistului și a curatoarei Sonia Voss.

„Filmele înaintează precum trenurile în noapte”, spune François Truffaut în Day for Night, realizând o analogie pătrunzătoare între lunga succesiune de vagoane care traversează un peisaj întunecat și mișcarea implacabilă înainte a poveștilor. S-ar putea spune același lucru și despre memorie – cu diferența evidentă că memoria implică o mișcare înapoi, către un trecut adesea neclar.

Mineriada este a treia parte a trilogiei lui Anton Roland Laub dedicate urmelor încă vizibile ale comunismului și tranziției postcomuniste în societatea românească. Inspirată de fotografii realizate de tatăl artistului în timpul evenimentelor din iunie 1990, seria explorează memoria, absența și relația dintre istoria personală și cea colectivă.
