Last day to see the exhibition.

Tissues of Belonging comes to an end today, so make sure to catch it between 12:00–17:00.

Thank you to everyone who visited, participated, and contributed to everything that unfolded around this exhibition: the workshop with Daniel Andújar, the talk with Alexandru Bălășescu, Eric Storm, and George Pleșu, the artists' guided tour, and all the curious visitors who stopped by with questions that sparked meaningful conversations.

It has been a pleasure to witness the exchanges, reflections, and encounters that emerged throughout the exhibition.

Stay tuned for the next chapters of In the Shadow of The Flag, a project organized by Alt Iași Cultural Association in collaboration with Borderline Art Space.

See you soon. ✨

Cătălin Rulea is a Romanian contemporary artist whose practice moves between painting, drawing, installation, and experimental visual narratives. His works often investigate memory, perception, and the psychological tension between intimacy and public space, developing layered compositions that combine symbolic imagery with subtle social observation.

Working with a poetic and introspective visual language, Rulea explores themes of fragility, transition, and the emotional traces embedded in everyday environments. Through carefully constructed atmospheres and understated gestures, his practice creates spaces where personal reflection intersects with broader cultural and collective experiences.

James Clar, USA Flag, 2021, reflective safety fabric, 130 x 247 cm

James Clar (b. 1979, Wisconsin, USA; lives and works in Manila, Philippines) is a light and media artist interested in new technological production processes and their application to artistic narrative forms. His works utilize the information systems that saturate our daily existence, provoking contemplation on how they shape our understanding of culture and ourselves. By understanding light and the ways we see, his artistic lens explores the modulating effects of perception and narrative dynamics.

The piece consists of the five flags of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (China,France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States). These members have veto power, which means they can block any Security Council resolution. The practice of placing a flag on a coffin is common in many funeral rites, especially for military personnel, veterans, or members of certain organizations. In this custom, which follows a specific protocol, the flag symbolizes the service and dedication of the deceased.

Avelino Sala’s work questions cultural and social reality from a late romantic perspective with a critical point of view. By continuously exploring social imagery, Sala identifies the painful points, demonstrating the power of art as a space for experimentation and for the creation of new worlds. Sala is a Spanish referent of art as a vehicle for political resistance, in his production there is a kind of poetics that reflect on State powers and the control they exercise. His recognizable aesthetic discourse is as necessary as it is powerful, encompassing sensitive and relevant themes such as migration, contemporary dislocation, the environmental crisis and the paradoxes of capitalism. Sala works in the global context of contemporary Art.

The idea for the flag stems from the history of the Villa Heike building. Built in 1910 by the factory owner Richard Heike in East Berlin, it served the East German secret police (Stasi) between 1946 and 1989 as an archive of collected and processed N**i files—information on National Socialists during the Third Reich between 1933 and 1945. On maps of the GDR, the building, like several others and the Stasi prison for political prisoners, was not marked. The Stasi restricted zone in which these buildings were located was shown as a blank space, camouflaged and thus simultaneously marked as sensitive territory.

The flag with the camouflage pattern (blue instead of beige/brown) of the former East German military camouflages itself—and fails in the process. On the surface, this is a humorous contradiction. It's about visible invisibility, or rather, the dialectic of visibility and invisibility. And it's a parallel to national (domestic) intelligence services, which also camouflage themselves, but simultaneously need a certain degree of visibility, or rather, public perception, for deterrence to be effective.

Chus Garcia Fraile, En Construccion/Under Construction, flags made from lego bricks

Chus García-Fraile is a Spanish contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice combines painting, installation, text, and conceptual strategies to explore consumer culture, identity, language, and the visual codes of contemporary society.

According to the European Agency for Fundamental Rights, seven out of ten LGBTI people in Europe hide their sexual orientation or gender identity during their school years. Education is a tool that contributes to achieving equality and we must emphasize it without implying an imposition on other cultural identities. There would also be an intention to approach art to the little ones, the Lego pieces with which these flags are built are highly recognizable by children from preschool, the playful aspect of this piece that would be very familiar to them would help them to approach the arts visual discipline so important in their training and creative perception. The educational process is essential to improve the various future social problems.

Her works would propose the formation of flags of the LGTBI community with the classic lego-bricks, the brick as a symbol of gender identity construction. We already know that the expression of gender is how each one externalizes their identity and that sexual orientation is related to who you want, well, it is necessary to emphasize that society is not yet aware of how to achieve «a more cohesive, egalitarian, and fair society ”.
