Whether it’s a memory or a feeling, a piece of art can evoke powerful emotions when we look at it. Art can cheer us up after a bad day, make us remember, or inspire us to do more in life. It can provide comfort that we are not the only ones feeling a certain way.

Art provides a reflection back to us that enables us to chew on our own reactions, emotion, and thoughts. Whatever that emotion - positive or negative - it lets us know that we are not isolated in those thoughts.

In these troubled times, art is one of the best ways of making sense of the world.

Art encourages you to look and perceive and think about the patterns and structures of the world. Especially the immediate world of the senses, of colors, forms, texture, location, harmony, and dissonance.

From the poetry of Dylan Thomas to the writings of Maya Angelou, from the photos of Diane Arbus to the paintings of Claude Monet, art encourages us to look beyond our immediate circumstances and think about the world with fresh senses.

Making art and looking at art are forms of thinking. You think with your senses so that there is no separation between the sensory moment and the intuitive idea.

In education, it is vitally important to encourage young, curious minds to have confidence in their own perceptions, to be able to experience the world beyond the digital screen and to have the assurance that their perceptions are as deep as human history.

Art foregrounds human empathy above practical expediency.

Why We Need ART
"If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.”
Edward Hopper

1. Art is a Natural Human Behavior, a part of who we are.
We need ART because it makes us complete human beings.

2. Art is Communication, it helps us to share thoughts, ideas, and visions that may not be able to be articulated any other way. We need ART to have a full range of expression.

3. Art is Healing, it provides a release, a place for reflection, and a way to engage our whole selves. We need ART to keep us healthy.

4. Art Tells Our Story, is a history lesson, a record, a preservation of culture, an autobiography, all in one. We need ART to understand and to share our individual and shared history.

5. Art is a Shared Experience, a collective activity, it offers us a reason to come together and share in an experience. We need ART to keep us connected.

Art, in its forms, exists in every community, every culture, and every country. It has been created since time began, in cave paintings and rock art. In today’s world, we know that art can be a major economic force, yet we continue to question the worth of art.

A day in Eli`s art studio, seeing her at work, surrounded by her creations is the most inspiring, Venusian experience.
