Photo taken circa 1880 in the Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal. I love the keen sense of fashion and appreciation for “modernity” even back then. The castle had been built by the Muslim Moors, at one point was inhabited by Monks, then the Christians (Ferdinand II). Each conquering the next they didn’t look to decimate all trace of each other’s religion, taste and aesthetics but incorporated the finest elements of style ritual and even practice into a badass modern fusion of culture, architecture and design. Couldn’t get a photo of the palace interior as phones were banned) ;)
