To: Honorable President of the Administrative Board of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of São Brás de Alportel; President of the Municipal Chamber of São Brás de Alportel; Bishop of the Algarve; President of the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias; President of the Algarve CCDR; Honorable Minister of Culture.
The unjustified suspension of the Museum’s director jeopardizes a project that has been honoring São Brás de Alportel for more than 20 years.
The Costume Museum of São Brás de Alportel is considered an exemplary case of Social Museology practice in Portugal. It is a museum at the service of the community, where people identify with and participate in its activities.
In a museum with only two permanent technical workers, around 60 people have joined, spread across various working groups. They find in the Museum a welcoming space where they work, voluntarily and graciously, on preserving memory, conducting historical research, collecting traditional techniques and tools, and cataloging and conserving items, all with a general focus on reflecting on the present and building the future. This group is joined by a larger one of about 800 members, spread across 36 different cultural activities, known as the Friends of the Museum.
The notoriety of the Costume Museum of São Brás de Alportel is due to its director, Emanuel Sancho, who took on the role in 1997 and, since then, has been building an innovative museological model with great dedication and competence, warmly embracing the many activities suggested by the community.
In 2007, Emanuel Sancho was one of the founders of the Algarve Museum Network, having served on its Coordinating Group multiple times.
In 2015, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel awarded him the insignia of "Value and Altruism."
Emanuel Sancho’s merit is recognized by his peers, as he has held leadership roles in MINOM – the International Movement for New Museology (Portugal), since 2011 until the present day, currently serving as the vice-president of the Board.
In 2021, he won the "Museologist of the Year" award from APOM - the Portuguese Association of Museology.
Also in 2021, the São Brás de Alportel Municipal Chamber awarded him an official Commendation.
However, since 2016, the new Administrative Board of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of São Brás de Alportel, under a guardianship that should be understood as protection and support, began a latent conflict with the Museum, undermining its autonomy and weakening it.
Aware of his responsibilities and duties, the director stood up for the Museum and denounced repeated interferences in influential areas of cultural management, leading to an unequal and unjustified conflict, resulting in his suspension on 19/09/2024.
This arbitrary action poses a serious risk of losing all the work built over decades, thanks to the voluntary efforts of many, always welcomed with the enthusiasm and experience of director Emanuel Sancho.
We appeal for an end to indiscriminate interference from the governing board!
We urgently call for the director’s return to the Costume Museum of São Brás de Alportel!
