Karla Ruas mudou-se da Nova Zelândia para o Porto, em 2019, para estudar Ilustração na ESAD. A pandemia acabou por prolongar a estadia da artista brasileira, que decidiu prosseguir os seus estudos com um mestrado em Pintura na FBAUP.
No seu atelier, Karla falou-nos sobre o seu percurso artístico, que tem como tema central a representação do corpo da mulher negra. A partir dele, emergem novos universos onde criaturas e elementos coexistem em harmonia.
No seu trabalho mais recente, a natureza ganha uma presença ampliada, com montanhas e vulcões a assumirem o protagonismo de paisagens habitadas. Para a artista, estes elementos encerram camadas de memória ancestral e atuam como conectores entre diferentes mundos, estabelecendo sinergias entre a terra e o céu.
As contaminações e os atravessamentos entre o humano e o mais-do-que-humano, bem como as diferentes temporalidades, manifestam-se também na relação alquímica que Karla Ruas estabelece através da produção dos seus próprios pigmentos naturais, um traço distintivo das suas composições. . . .

Karla Ruas moved from New Zealand to Porto in 2019 to study illustration at ESAD. The pandemic ultimately led the Brazilian artist to extend her stay and continue her studies with a Master's degree in Painting at FBAUP.
During our visit to her studio, Karla spoke to us about her artistic journey, the central theme of which is the representation of the Black female body. From this starting point, new universes emerge in which creatures and elements coexist in harmony.
In her most recent work, nature has an expanded presence, with mountains and volcanoes playing a central role in inhabited landscapes. For the artist, these elements hold layers of ancestral memory and act as links between different worlds, creating connections between earth and sky.
Contaminations and crossings between the human and the more-than-human, as well as different temporalities, are expressed through Karla Ruas's alchemical relationship with her materials, particularly her production of natural pigments, which is a distinctive feature of her compositions.
