WORDS OF THE IN-BETWEEN – PALABRAS DE LA ESPERA - installation
Gold embroidery on scrap fabric, sewn onto rag paper (approximately 15cm x 21cm), gold thread, sand, rocks.
Working with water-based media requires patience and kindness. You can’t rush the process. Throughout the many layers of these works, there are periods of time when you simply wait. You wait for the water and pigments to work their magic, watching them dance on the canvas or paper. You wait for the paint to settle until it’s ready to receive yet another layer. You wait until you are prepared to continue creating with the materials or decide it’s time to step back because your work is finished.
During those waiting times and since I began working on what is now the a r e n a s collection, I did a lot of embroidery on scraps of fabric or paper—those same scraps I have been using to cover tables or floors in my studio. At a certain point, I found myself mainly embroidering words in Spanish—my native language—that, for different reasons, had special meanings during my process of settling into a new place, learning a new language, and getting to know a new culture. They served as roots keeping me grounded amid significant changes. As days and months passed, the collection of words continued to grow, and I am sharing them for the first time in this installation, which was explicitly designed for this exhibition. They are like a journal I kept during the last two years of working on
