🇵🇹 As pinturas nas paragens de Cabril, no Gerês, voltaram a surgir numa nova reportagem! Um pouco mais sobre a história por detrás deste projeto e sobre a minha representação da subida da vezeira das vacas na paragem de Chelo.

🇬🇧 In July, I participated in this amazing project that took me to Gerês, together with seven other artists, to paint a mural on an old bus stop. This is a short interview (in Portuguese) I participated in about the project (link down below).

Alcon blue & marsh gentian | Borboleta-azul-das-turfeiras & genciana-das-turfeiras

🇬🇧 The Alcon blue (𝘗𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘯) belongs to the family Lycaenidae. In Portugal, this species is threatened, mainly due to its special life cycle. Firstly, it needs a specific host plant, the marsh gentian (𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦), to lay its eggs and for the caterpillars, which feed on the flower's reproductive organs. Later on, the caterpillars fall into the soil, where 𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢 ants will find them and take them into their nest. The ants mistake them for their own larvae and will take care of them for months until they pupate. When the metamorphosis is complete, the Alcon blue emerges as a butterfly.

🇵🇹 A borboleta-azul-das-turfeiras (𝘗𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘯) pertence à família Lycaenidae. Em Portugal, esta espécie encontra-se ameaçada, em grande parte porque possui um ciclo de vida muito curioso. Em primeiro lugar, necessita de uma planta hospedeira específica, a genciana-das-turfeiras (𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦), para depositar os seus ovos e para as lagartas, que se alimentam dos órgãos reprodutivos da flor. Mais tarde, as lagartas irão cair no solo e serão transportadas por formigas do género 𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢 para o interior dos seus ninhos. As formigas, que as confudem com a sua própria prole, irão tratar das lagartas durante vários meses até que se convertam em pupas. Ao completarem a metamorfose, emergem sob a forma de borboleta.

Marsh gentian | Genciana-das-turfeiras | 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦

🇬🇧 The marsh gentian is a perennial plant of the family Gentianaceae. It is an important host for the Alcon blue butterfly (𝘗𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘯).

Alcon blue | Borboleta-azul-das-turfeiras | 𝘗𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘯

🇬🇧 The Alcon blue, from the family Lycaenidae, is one of the rarest and threatened butterflies in Portugal. It requires a specific host plant, the marsh gentian (𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦), for both the caterpillars to feed on and for laying its eggs.

Fringed rue | Arruda | 𝘙𝘶𝘵𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴

🇬🇧 The fringed rue is a flowering plant of the Rutaceae family. Rues are an important host and food source for caterpillars, such as the swallowtail butterfly.

It is part of the exhibit “Lepidópteros”, that took place in December 2019.

Swallowtail (caterpillar) | Borboleta-cauda-de-andorinha (lagarta) | 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘯

🇬🇧 Swallowtail's caterpillars feed mostly on plants such as fennel and rue. When threatened, they present a forked orange structure named osmeterium, that emits an unpleasant odour to repel predators.

🇵🇹 As lagartas da borboleta-cauda-de-andorinha alimentam-se principalmente de plantas como a arruda e o funcho. Quando ameaçadas, apresentam uma estrutura bifurcada laranja designada por osmeterium, que emite um odor desagradável, com o propósito de afastar eventuais predadores.

Swallowtail | Borboleta-cauda-de-andorinha | 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘯

🇬🇧 The swallowtail, of the family Papilionidae, has a wingspan of 60-80 mm. This butterfly occurs throughout Europe, including in Portugal from February to December, most frequently in unimproved land where flowers are abundant.

🇵🇹 A borboleta-cauda-de-andorinha, pertencente à família Papilionidae, tem uma envergadura de 60-80mm. Ocorre por toda a Europa, incluindo em Portugal entre Fevereiro e Dezembro, mais frequentemente em locais não intervencionados pelo Homem e abundantes em flores.
