Illustrations and creations of Emma Lopes, artist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Spending time in wild places is her favourite pastime and mother nature is her muse. A core belief which filters into every aspect of her work is that all life is interconnected. Working in watercolour, gouache, collage, and sometimes even marine debris, she uses detail, pattern and colour to focus our attention on the vi

brancy and wonder of nature. Her art is a form of activism through celebration of a world we must fight to protect.

The problem with making a sketch at one time of day, of year, of light, of cloud & ocean conditions is that when you take a photograph of it on a different day the essence of what you were painting feels very removed. As you can see, I'm not going for realism, I'm actually trying to move further from it all the time. I'm trying to capture a feeling of being there, the things I was drawn to in the moment.

This is the beach I sometimes sneak to after school drop off, it's pretty sheltered at all times of the year so makes a good swim spot even in January in clement conditions. I like to come here on my own, swim a bit, look in the rockpools 🐙 🦐🦪🐚 and have a bit of quiet contemplation before I start the work day.

In busy periods or long periods of stormy weather I don't manage and I miss it in my soul.

Mushroom theme for our anniversary, my fun-guy renato lopes ❤️❤️❤️. For those first years of marriage we had fun making things with those materials like paper for 1 year, I think cotton for 2... Now I have no idea what material we are on now so I decided on a mushroom theme. Love a mushroom! 🍄 We would like to grow our own, after all where we live is warm & humid. Today I will be off to find a nice Portobello to make a mushroom something-or-other.

Looking forward to some foraging & reading the Sheldrake book, I've heard great things about it!

Started a sketch in situ 1 year ago... Came back to the same place to finish it off a year later because that's just how things go. My sketchbook, which is purely for my own joy fills very slowly... When I had a baby who napped while I sketched it seemed to fill itself up far more quickly. Nowadays, I rarely get to stay still for long enough. We are in the "waking hours are for play-time" stage and I know these years will not last forever. One day I will have so much time to sketch I'm sure and I'll miss the hours of play...

As August rolls towards it's end I'm gearing up to get back into my studio. I'm looking forward to it but there's no way I'm wishing this time away!

I haven't documented every stage of my home studio renovation. But it was a teenage boys bedroom, with a huge wallpaper of Brooklyn Bridge & quite "noisy" laminated flooring. I needed something less distracting. We donated the flooring and managed to get some dead stock wooden floorboards. We removed the wallpaper & gave it some fresh paint. I spent hours on various platforms finding 2nd hand furniture, I had to supplement with a couple if sets of drawers. I change my mind regularly about where the tables should go and the shelves according to the nature of the work and how the light enters the studio according to each season.. I need it to be quite flexible as natural light is essential. I really appreciate the access to the garden for me to stare out at in painting breaks. It's still not a fully "resolved" space but I feel very lucky to have this place to get creative! ❤️

Coral reef study details 🪸
Watercolour &gouache on hot press Fabriano paper
I've just started painting my biggest ever coral reef. I've been working on simplifying form & breaking down pattern but at the same time hold onto something of the complexity that I'm so drawn to... I'll let you know how it goes! 😅

Arecaceae are a family of evergreen, perennial flowering plants. Their range is fairly extensive with most growing in tropical & subtropical regions, although there are palms native to temperate Mediterranean regions. About 2 thirds of palms are found in wet forests (they are for example one of the most abundant & important trees of the Amazon rainforest) but some varieties can also be found in desert regions, tolerating drought or coastal, fresh water swamps. They also bring us a range of fruits from dates to coconuts to acai.

I've drawn them in a range of different styles and contexts over the years 🌴💚🌴
