The moment you step through the doors, your eyes are drawn straight to the primary aquarium—an immense Iwagumi stretching across the back wall. It sets the tone for everything that follows.

What impressed me most about ADA Thailand wasn’t the aquariums themselves.

It was the discipline behind them.

Beautiful aquascapes are easy to admire in photographs. What we rarely see is the consistency required to keep them looking that way year after year.

That commitment was visible everywhere.

The plants were among the healthiest I’ve ever seen. Across dozens of displays, it was genuinely difficult to find signs of algae, nutrient deficiencies, or neglect.

Every aquarium reflected the same thoughtful approach that Thana has spent years refining. Each display felt mature, balanced, and intentionally maintained.

One of the layouts we spent time discussing was a large Iwagumi aquarium.

At first glance it appears simple.

But true simplicity is one of the hardest things to achieve.

Every stone, every blade of grass, and every maintenance decision is exposed. There is nowhere to hide imperfections.

Thana and his team generously walked me through their fertilizer programs and maintenance routines.

Every display has its own schedule.

Everything is documented.

Seeing the systems behind the gallery made me appreciate that these beautiful aquariums aren’t maintained by chance—they’re the result of years of experience, discipline, and consistency.

One of my favorite conversations was about aquariums that have been running for more than a decade.

Rather than becoming more complicated, many have become simpler over time.

More epiphytes.

More sustainable planting.

More natural evolution.

It was a perspective that has stayed with me ever since.

The same philosophy extends beyond the aquariums.

I loved seeing how naturally Thana moves between Nature Aquariums, terrariums, and paludariums. Whether underwater or above it, every composition felt carefully considered and allowed to mature over time rather than simply being arranged for a photograph.

Walking through the gallery, you begin to recognize Thana’s design philosophy.

Nothing felt excessive.

“To know nature is to love nature.” — Takashi Amano

Some places live up to their reputation. Very few exceed it. ADA Thailand did. It’s clear the ADA Thailand team knows nature!

I had known about the gallery for years through ADA’s international partner network, so I arrived with high expectations. Even then, it managed to surprise me.

The building itself is surprisingly unassuming. I arrived early and waited downstairs, where a small courtyard features a beautifully maintained ADA aquarium surrounded by tropical plants beneath a skylight. It quietly builds anticipation before you even step inside.

Then I climbed the stairs.

As the gallery slowly revealed itself, I realized this wasn’t simply a showroom. Nature Aquariums, Iwagumi layouts, paludariums, and botanical displays were all presented with extraordinary care.

Everything was so well maintained and the gallery and displays were spectacular.

Spending time with Thana Thanapalin made the visit even more memorable. His generosity and the gallery’s warm hospitality reminded me of experiences I’ve had in Japan. It felt less like a store and more like a living gallery devoted to the art of aquascaping.

Very cool experience visiting 🤙🌿

With only three months remaining, I highly recommend visiting Oceanário de Lisboa to see Takashi Amano’s exhibit if you haven’t been and have the opportunity. This is a must-see for aquascapers and hobbyists. Oceanário de Lisboa

More than two years later, this aquarium has changed a lot from what it used to be. Time brings change, and that’s part of the beauty of the hobby. Even now, in its final chapter, it still has a charm of its own. I’ll probably be dismantling it soon. 🌿
