OPEN CALL | Em Obras – Laboratório Experimental
O Laboratório Experimental EM OBRAS é um programa educativo na área das artes visuais dirigido para estudantes, artistas e outros agentes culturais em início de carreira, a decorrer na Zaratan.
Pretende-se incentivar a atividade dos emergentes, apetrechando-os de meios de trabalho para a produção nas áreas das artes visuais e dos novos médias, e gerar uma oportunidade para que os participantes possam testar as suas pesquisas e práticas artísticas num ambiente comunitário.
A Zaratan- Arte Contemporânea coloca-se no filão da tradição dos espaços dirigidos por artistas. Historicamente, os artistas têm-se especializado em identificar necessidades culturais e disponibiliza-las através da criação de estruturas independentes. Destacado dos métodos tradicionais de ensino, o laboratório oferece uma experiência alternativa que privilegia a prática, a improvisação, o debate e o crescimento.
O curso estrutura-se em 15 dias de trabalho coletivo com um conjunto de máximo 10 participantes e 7 formadores: António Olaio, Daniel Antunes Pinheiro, Gemma Noris, João Fonte Santa, José Chaves, Nuno Direitinho e Pedro Gramaxo. Os primeiros 10 dias do laboratório propõem momentos de reflexão, partilha e debate. Em conjunto com os formadores os participantes desenvolvem atividades práticas com o objetivo de aprofundar os seus conhecimentos na área das artes visuais e facilitar o diálogo entre os envolvidos e o meio envolvente.
Durante a última semana do laboratório, o espaço da galeria da Zaratan estará aberto ao público e transformar-se-á no palco dos participantes, que poderão preencher o espaço físico com pensamento e produções transversais: individuais e coletivas, materiais e efémeras.
A de 2026 será a sexta edição do Laboratório Experimental. Conta com apoio da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa e da República Portuguesa – Cultura, Juventude e Desporto / Direção-Geral das Artes.

ELEGIBILIDADE:
Estudantes (a partir do ensino superior), artistas e outros agentes culturais emergentes, nacionais e internacionais.
A participação não requer nenhum tipo de equipamento ou conhecimento técnico específico.

BIOGRAFIAS DOS FORMADORES:
ANTÓNIO OLAIO (1963, Angola) Formado pela Escola de Belas Artes do Porto. Vive em Coimbra. As suas performances no início dos anos 80 levaram-no à música (Repórter Estrábico 1986-1991, António Olaio & João Taborda, 1996-2024, e desde 2024, The Middle People, com Mikey Georgeson, e outros projectos em dupla com Manuel Guimarães ou com Vitor Torpedo). Com o músico e ator Richard Strange criou projetos de performance e teatro apresentados em Portugal e no Reino Unido. Exposições e performances em Portugal, Espanha, Alemanha, EUA, França, Holanda, Reino Unido, México. Diretor do Colégio das Artes da Universidade de Coimbra entre 2013 e 2023 onde é professor. Professor também no curso de arquitetura da Universidade de Coimbra. Investigador no CEIS20, Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares, Universidade de Coimbra.
DANIEL ANTUNES PINHEIRO (Moçambique, 1980) divide a sua actividade entre as Artes Plásticas, a Fotografia, o Som e a docência universitária. É doutorado em Fotografia pela FBAUL e licenciado em Artes Plásticas – Pintura e Mestre em Arte Multimédia pela mesma instituição. Tem uma Pós-graduação em Artes Musicais – Estudos em Música e Tecnologia pela FCSH. Desde 2012 é Assistente Convidado no departamento de Arte Multimédia da FBAUL leccionando Fotografia e Arte Sonora. Desde 2018 co-organiza o programa de exposições do espaço Ascensor sediado na Associação Goela. Participou em diversas exposições individuais e colectivas desde 2005. Vive e trabalha entre Lisboa e Montemor-o-Novo.
GEMMA NORIS (1986, Brescia) é fundadora e diretora artística da Zaratan. Licenciou-se em Pintura na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Brera, em Milão (2010) e obteve um mestrado em Arte Multimédia na FBAUL (2014). O seu trabalho opõe-se a conexão entre a arte e a permanência, e mexe-se em direção às práticas colaborativas de intervenção. Interessa-se por práticas autogeridas de criação e produção artística. Desde 2012, colabora com vários projetos independentes e geridos por artistas na Europa.
JOÃO FONTE SANTA estudou Pintura na Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade Clássica de Lisboa. Começou por se dedicar à produção de banda-desenhada underground no contexto do surgimento de fanzines. Lentamente, contudo, o seu trabalho afirmar-se-ia no campo da pintura. Trabalhando a partir de um extenso fundo de imagens e referências de cultura pop, edificaria uma obra que tem tanto de visualmente atraente como de pertinente no modo como apresenta uma visão do mundo particularmente crítica. Expõe regularmente desde meados dos anos 90.
JOSÉ CHAVES (1982, Lisboa) vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Licenciou-se em Publicidade e Marketing na Escola Superior de Comunicação Social de Lisboa e obteve um mestrado em Arte Multimédia na FBAUL. Em 2014 fundou a Zaratan com um coletivo de artistas, e desde então coordena as atividades da associação. O seu trabalho incorpora várias linguagens artísticas, tais como composições de música, cinema, documentário e videoarte. Esta intersecção permite-lhe criar o seu próprio corpo de obras, que explora as imagens audiovisuais e os seus pós-multi-efeitos. Participou em festivais, residências e exposições em todo o mundo.
NUNO DIREITINHO (1981, Lisboa) vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Realizou mestrado em Fine Art Media na Slade School of Art, UCL Londres (2014) e licenciatura em Fine Art Photography na Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow (2011) Exposições recentes incluem: ‘Future Nothing’ - Zaratan Arte Contemporânea (2020, Lisboa); ’I’m in the bath where are you?’ - The Icing Room (2019, Londres); ’All Things Considered’ - Shed (2018, Frauenfeld); ‘We are All Lichens Now’ - Zaratan Arte Contemporânea (2016, Lisboa); ‘Cornerstone’ - APT Gallery (2015, Londres); ‘Get in Lane’ - Catalyst Arts (2015, Belfast) e ‘Open Cube’ - White Cube (2013, Londres).
PEDRO GRAMAXO (1989, Lisboa) é um artista focado em arte construtiva, instalação e fotografia. Com mestrado em Arquitetura e Artes pela Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa (2012), a sua prática cruza estas duas disciplinas para explorar a nossa relação com o espaço, o tempo e a perceção. O seu trabalho aborda a escala como um exercício visual, criando instalações de cariz monumental em ambientes naturais e artísticos (como a "Landscape Series" e a "Dimension Series"). Desde 2012, tem apresentado a sua obra em exposições e intervenções de arte pública a nível internacional, com passagens por países como Portugal, Itália, Rússia, Argentina, Islândia e Brasil.

OPEN CALL | Em Obras – Experimental Lab
The Experimental Laboratory EM OBRAS is an educational program in the field of visual arts aimed at students, artists, and other early-career cultural agents, taking place at Zaratan.
The aim is to encourage the activity of emerging professionals by equipping them with working tools for production in the fields of visual arts and new media, and to create an opportunity for participants to test their research and artistic practices in a community environment.
Zaratan - Arte Contemporânea positions itself within the tradition of artist-run spaces. Historically, artists have specialized in identifying cultural needs and providing for them through the creation of independent structures. Detached from traditional teaching methods, the laboratory offers an alternative experience that privileges practice, improvisation, debate, and growth.
The course is structured over 15 days of collective work with a maximum of 10 participants and 7 instructors: António Olaio, Daniel Antunes Pinheiro, Gemma Noris, João Fonte Santa, José Chaves, Nuno Direitinho, and Pedro Gramaxo. The first 10 days of the laboratory propose moments of reflection, sharing, and debate. Together with the instructors, participants will develop practical activities with the objective of deepening their knowledge in the visual arts and facilitating dialogue between those involved and the surrounding environment.
During the last week of the laboratory, Zaratan's gallery space will be open to the public and will transform into a stage for the participants, who will be able to fill the physical space with transversal thoughts and productions: individual and collective, material and ephemeral.
The 2026 edition will be the sixth edition of the Experimental Laboratory. It is supported by the Lisbon City Council and the República Portuguesa – Cultura, Juventude e Desporto / Direção-Geral das Artes.

ELIGIBILITY: Students (from higher education onwards), artists, and other emerging cultural agents, both national and international. Participation does not require any specific equipment or technical knowledge.

TEACHERS' BIOGRAPHIES:
ANTÓNIO OLAIO (1963, Angola) Graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Porto. Lives in Coimbra. His performances in the early 80s led him to music (Repórter Estrábico 1986-1991, António Olaio & João Taborda, 1996-2024, and since 2024, The Middle People, with Mikey Georgeson, as well as other duo projects with Manuel Guimarães or Vitor Torpedo). With musician and actor Richard Strange, he created performance and theater projects presented in Portugal and the UK. Exhibitions and performances in Portugal, Spain, Germany, USA, France, Netherlands, UK, and Mexico. Director of the College of Arts at the University of Coimbra between 2013 and 2023, where he is a professor. Also a professor in the architecture course at the University of Coimbra. Researcher at CEIS20, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Coimbra.
DANIEL ANTUNES PINHEIRO (Mozambique, 1980) divides his activity between Fine Arts, Photography, Sound, and university teaching. He holds a degree in Fine Arts – Painting and a Master's in Multimedia Art – Photography from FBAUL, and a PhD (Photography) from the same institution. He has a Postgraduate degree in Musical Arts – Studies in Music and Technology from FCSH. Since 2012, he has been a Guest Assistant in the Multimedia Art department at FBAUL, teaching Photography and Sound Art. Since 2018, he has co-organized the exhibition program of the Ascensor space based at Associação Goela. He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions since 2005. Lives and works between Lisbon and Montemor-o-Novo.
GEMMA NORIS (1986, Brescia) is the founder and artistic director of Zaratan. She graduated in Painting from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan (2010) and obtained a Master's degree in Multimedia Art at FBAUL (2014). Her work opposes the connection between art and permanence, moving towards collaborative intervention practices. She is interested in self-managed practices of artistic creation and production. Since 2012, she has collaborated with several independent and artist-run projects in Europe.
JOÃO FONTE SANTA studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Classical University of Lisbon. He began by dedicating himself to the production of underground comics in the context of the emergence of fanzines. Slowly, however, his work would affirm itself in the field of painting. Working from an extensive background of images and pop culture references, he built a body of work that is as visually attractive as it is pertinent in the way it presents a particularly critical worldview. He has exhibited regularly since the mid-90s.
JOSÉ CHAVES (1982, Lisbon) lives and works in Lisbon. He graduated in Advertising and Marketing at the Superior School of Social Communication of Lisbon and obtained a Master's degree in Multimedia Art at FBAUL. In 2014, he founded Zaratan with an artists' collective, and since then he coordinates the association's activities. His work incorporates various artistic languages, such as music composition, cinema, documentary, and video art. This intersection allows him to create his own body of work, which explores audiovisual images and their post-multi-effects. He has participated in festivals, residencies, and exhibitions worldwide.
NUNO DIREITINHO (1981, Lisbon) lives and works in Lisbon. PEDRO GRAMAXO (1989, Lisbon) is an artist focused on constructive art, installation, and photography. With a Master's in Architecture and Arts from Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa (2012), his practice crosses these two disciplines to explore our relationship with space, time, and perception. His work approaches scale as a visual exercise, creating monumental installations in both natural and artistic environments (such as the "Landscape Series" and "Dimension Series"). Since 2012, he has presented his work in exhibitions and public art interventions internationally, passing through countries like Portugal, Italy, Russia, Argentina, Iceland, and Brazil.
